Yesterday was the 43rd anniversary of the Aberfan disaster. A very sad day for the whole of south Wales and one which shaped the future of our valleys in the decades to come. I wonder how long it would have taken for the tips around Abertillery and Cwmitllery to be removed without the horrific events a few miles away?

We can bemoan the state of our town but we can't deny that the surrounding countryside is almost unrecognisably improved compared to 40 years ago.

RIP all those who lost their lives at Aberfan and condolences to those they left behind.

No longer 'how green was my Valley' but now 'how green IS my Valley'.

It's a good call Martyn.
But for that tragedy what would it have looked like now ?

Those children were my school age yet the opportunities I've had were denied them.

Yet somehow they managed to do more for these valleys than we all can hope to do.

Sorrow abated by gratitude in some small way.
Don't just Rest in Peace but hopefully Rest with Pride as well.

Even to this day the Aberfan disaster is still etched in my mind its a time we will never forget,The pits over the years caused the streets in Abertillery and other towns and villages to be lined with mourners from mining disasters, but i never thought i would see the day when so many youngsters would be taken alongside school staff and other people in one foul swoop.
As an ex-pat my family and all the other ex-pats could not take in what we was watching on the TV.it was awfull.
When i read about it now or hear anyone talk about it i always remember a prayer said by my mother on that day.

I have been through the vally of weeping
The valley of sorrow and pain
But the god of all comfort was with them
At hand to uphold and sustain.

Hi Fred. I agree the Sixbells mining disaster and the Aberfan is etched in my mind forever it was a dreadful experience and one I hope future generations will never have to live through. The sense of loss, mourning and inccredulation could be felt through every valley community the day of the Aberfan disaster and for a long time after
