This isn't really a topic, I suppose, but as someone who grew up in Abertillery -- I now live in California -- I just wanted to say how impressed I am with the website. There is quite obviously a lot of pride in the town. So my congratulations to all those folk who put time and energy into the site. Diolch fawr!
Welcome to the forum and your comments are more than appreciated I am sure by all our local web sites that put in a lot of work and effort to maintaining our culture and heritage as well as keeping the site alive, informative and interesting.
A small but willing band of local volunteers are hoping to update this web site as a community project but not to the exclusion of ex pats whose input and ideas are invaluable. We all live here and take things for granted and may have different interests therefore we would ask for any contribution as too what articles, photos, memories, news ect that you would like to see on the main site or what you think may interest new visitors old an young alike. _________________ My life is no rehearsal There'll be no curtain call encore, so I've thrown my screwed up script away to ad lib my life once more!
Many thanks for your reply, Carolyn,
My childhood memories of Abertillery are of a rather dirty town because of the coalmines and ironworks, but it also had a great energy too. This has obviously faded with the demise of mining, but perhaps in the near future the town will revive again. The area is beautiful, with much fascinating history, and the people are warm and friendly. My greatest disappointment when last I was there, was to see all the stores had steel roller-shutters. The Main Street looked a bit like Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles.
But as long as there are people concerned with the town, things will get better. I'm in my sixties and still play football every weekend, as well as kayaking and hiking - this I attribute to tearing up and down Abertillery's steep hillsides as a kid!
My best wishes to all your concened citizens - keep plugging away!
