I understand why the new law was brought in - with smaller children the lower belt would otherwise lie across the abdomen rather than pelvic bone. However mothers and fathers trying to persuade their 11 year kids to climb onto the booster seat have my sympathy...
Wonder where that leaves me some average 11- 12 year olds are bigger than me these days. I do not reach the hight restrictions on many fairground rides. What is now considered average for an adult, this applies to furniture, chairs, desk hights and workplace hights if standard and not custom made. Has this standardization gone up or have I shrunk over the last forty years.

Carolyn ,I have shrunk from 5ft2inchs to 5ft 1inchs so the young people today look like giants to me also but what concerns me is that the Police Men Firemen and Servicemen all look like school boys and girls now is it because I am 75?one consolation is now that I no longer drive I have no worries about car booster seats but I do worry that some parents will ignore the new laws about child seats as you know its illeagal to use a mobile phone whilst driving but sadly I live near to 2 schools and very often see children jumping all over the back seats of the cars whilst the driver of the cars are on their mobil phones it is a very common sight here in Nuneaton

I think the point Terry was making is ....
It may be very well to introduce a law that requires that youngsters should be suitable restrained whilst in the car but it seems that many, many drivers still do not see the necessity to belt up themselves .. just how are we going to get the children to wear a seatbelt and/or use a `booster seat` when all around they can see adults stupidly refusing to wear their seat belts
I have to say I do not know any adults who do not wear seat belts or belt up their children but if there are those who do not it is a very valid point.
My point was just the standardization of seat belts one size does not fit all. I am small and some seat belts strap around my neck and stomache not my chest and pelvis. An emergency stop at one time nearly throttled me. Some times I have to hold on to the one upper strap and hold it away from my throat for comfort whilst travelling _________________ My life is no rehearsal There'll be no curtain call encore, so I've thrown my screwed up script away to ad lib my life once more!

"I have to say I do not know any adults who do not wear seat belts"?
Just where have you been Carolyn?
Take just five minutes to stand on any street corner and note the drivers and passengers passing in carswho are not wearing seatbelts!
And I suppose their excuse could be that they didn't have time to put it on because they were using their mobile phone!
And while on the subject of these child booster seats ..
Has anyone seen any police officer checking these are being used?
P.S. There are many devices available to lower seatbelts for the `vertically challenged` amongst us.
Sorry Terry I did say I do not know any adults who do not wear their seatbelts, I am afraid that if I stood on a street corner watching passing motorists I would be lucky if I recognised the car or my own family and friends let alone focus on the seat belts.
There may well be a good number of devices for the "vertically challenged" but as a non driver or car owner I would be unlikely to purchase one and would not expect anyone else too either on my behalf especially a taxi service so maybe they should become standard. I think this will be asking to much as even public transport locally are not supplied with seat belts as yet. Having had two accidents over the last few years having been thrown from my seat on a bus I think this is long over due. I have also known quite a few bus drivers and indeed one or two contracted minibus drivers use their mobile phones whilst driving, one public transport driver was not only phoning but texting whilst driving. Has anyone seen police officers checking public transport and private motorists for anything other than speeding?
Martyn next time you offer me a lift best bring the booster cushion incase we get pulled over. _________________ My life is no rehearsal There'll be no curtain call encore, so I've thrown my screwed up script away to ad lib my life once more!

It seems that many laws are being introduce that are simply uninforceable in that the practicality of inforcing the seatbelt/child booster seat/ mobile phone laws would require a police officer stopping every car on every street corner.
The simple answer is better driver education and stronger punishment for those idiots who break these laws!
Good news Carloyn - saves me rummaging around in the loft
Brian - I guess the main effect of the law might be part of the education process you mentioned. I suppose there will be a few token prosecutions but mostly it'll be used to bring the issue to people's attention. I am sure there are plenty of people who had no idea that a normal seatbelt can do a lot of damage to a small child.
btw how are we going to punish transgressors when the law is unenforecable
