TRADITIONAL hospital wards are set to be phased out in Gwent in favour of single rooms.

Single rooms will become the norm for patients treated in Gwent during the next 10 years, ushering in what health watchdogs call "a sea-change in care."

I think this could be a great idea. Patients should be entitled to some level of dignity and privacy whilst in hospital. This could even help prevent the alarming growth in infections that patients are currently catching whilst in hospital.

It should be a lot easier to keep a single bedroom clean and hygenic than a ward full of people. Should any form of infection be identified it would also be easier to find the carriers.

The sooner the better I say.

I agree Kelvin. I've done a lot of hospital visiting lately and I think the old multi-bed wards have had their day. I am sure they are more cost effective than single wards but what price do you put on dignity? And as you say they might hopefully help arrest the spread of disease within hospitals.

One would hope that if single rooms are brought in there needs to be the appropriate level of care to go with them sadly this is not he case in many hospitals at this moment. Single rooms can afford patients more privacy and help prevent cross infection but also provodes a certain amount of isolation. Patients with restricted mobilty as many fracture and orthopedic requiring longer term care and traction for example would find it very lonley especially if they do not have little family or friends for company.

It would however, ease the bed situation between male and female, personally I would prefere four bedded rooms and greater attention to good basic nursing care.
