Is there anyone that knows if the Flook family ever lived in Abertillery as my Great Grandmother Sarah Ann Evans 1878 married George Henry Flook who may have been known as Henry in Newport around 1897 and I wondered how they met.

There were a number of Flook families living in the Abertillery, one such family lived in the Wodden Houses or huts near the old County School in Roseheyworth. A Jack Flook collier at the Roseheyworth pit lived at no 9 Wooden Houses on Saturday April 11th 1911 the house burned down killing his two young sons. Think the family later moved to Blaenau Gwent rows

There was also an Edward Flook boot maker Bridge Street Sixbells circa 1911-1920. Kelly's Directory

Sarah Evans (Miss) boot maker 37 Oak Street circa 1901 Kelly's Directory

Edward Evans boot & shoe dealer Somerset Street circa 1911 - 1920 Kelly's Directory

1881 census service unavailable at the moment to check on household names

Could be a link in boot makers long shot maybe but interesting

Hi Thanks for the information do you know if the Flooks originated form Bristol as I know a lot of Flooks did. I have been trying to find my Mothers Grandfather for ages I sent for my Grandfather James Redvers Flook 1900 Newport birth certificate and found his Mother was Sarah Ann Evans 1878 from Abertillery and his Father as George Henry Flook 1875, I am know trying to get there marraige certificate but think that he married as Henry Flook in Newport I am waiting to see if the records office come up with anything but it takes time. He put Newport as his place of birth but I have looked and no George or George Henry were born in Newport in 1875.

Have you checked to see that George Henry Flook's parents were married at the time of his birth? It would not be uncommon he could have been registered in his mohers maiden name.

I knew of two Flook families in Abertillery, one lived in arael street the other towards cwmtillery I think, the former had at least one son I G Flook, his names were welsh, and the other family had at least one daughter Betty her dob was probably 1943, IG's was probably 1944.
I know betty went to the grammar school as did IG. HTH

IG Flook's dad almost certainly worked down the six, I don't know what Betty's dad did, I know he never taught his daughter to play the comb and paper, as betty once lead a squadron of her house girls at the school's Eistedffod playing a rendition of the dambusters march and poor betty couldn't make hers work.......

Hi
You can tell that I am English as I dont know what down the six is what does it mean? My Mother was born in Newport where George/Henry(wish I knew what he was really called George Henry or Henry) lived with his wife who Sarah Evans from Abertillery. My Mother moved to the midlands as she met my Father who is from the midlands when he was stationed in Newport during the war
Loved the story about Betty thanks. Perhaps I am related to her as I am not very musical either.

Poppy, sorry, the six was six bells pit (colliery) most of the houses in arrail street and griffin(?) st had been owned by the coal masters for their workforce. I'm pretty sure they built lancaster street as well together with the "villas" at the warm turn end of lancaster street. But I may be wrong.

There was a mrs Flook who told fortunes in the 1950s. She lived in the street going from Six Bells towards llanhilleth. She had an eisteddfodd bardic chair in her living room.
