I live in Newport and would like to know anything about a Jewelery shop and its owner etc in the town centre owned by Iringham (I think this was the spelling of the surname as its German ) All that I know is that it sold good quality items and that the owner was intered during the war and did not return from the prison camp after the war. This man was related to my grandfather through marriage and would like to know more about this myserious man.
I suspect you may be referring to George Ihringer who was a watchmaker at 5 Church Street Abertillery, born in Germany in ~1862 .
I did some family history research for a relative of his some years back and can try to dig it out. On the 1911 census he is given incorrectly as GEORGE ILVINGER. In 1901 on Ancestry, use George Ihrig as the search. I can send you the details and image if you want for that census.
If you can get to Newport Library, his details are listed in the voting books in the 1920s for Abertillery.

Thankyou David for your fast response, wow. Your information is very valuable. I was talking with my mother yesterday about her fathers family (West) who came from Aberbeeg and his sister was married to George and only a few years before my gfather died he learnt that Goerge did not return from the Internment camp because he was shot for spying. Have you heard this story.? If its true etc? Your comments ? Thankyou. Can you send me the details of that cencus...thankyou again.

I remember Mrs Iringher who was a nice elderly lady who kept a clock and watch shop which I thought was in High Street above the Bush Hotel just about opposite the Midland Bank next to a pub (The Globe ?). It is about 70 years ago so I could be quite wrong.
Yes it was pre war or around that time............do you recall anything of her husband George.............as her husband was away maybe you have no recollection of him? Thankyou for your mail.

Sorry, have no memories of George or of Mrs Ihringers' death. I remember the lock-up shop where we took clocks and watches to be repaired but was away in the RAF from 1942/47.

Hi Mike
I have emailed you with George's 1901 entry. I have my doubts over the spying story. George lived in Abertillery throughout World War I without it appears any difficulties (I will ask the Cybertyleri crew to do a search of the Gazette archives for him - Carolyn?). By the time WWII broke out he would have been 77 years old (born 1862 according to 1901 census) - why and how would he have been thought of spying then? Just my thoughts.
Following up on Jim's point, I seem to recall in the research I did that their shop moved to High Street. I am still trying to locate that info for you.
Thankyou David for the mail and your thoughts...................just before my
grandfather died ( he knew Goerge well ) he learnt of the reason that he did not return from internment. Yes of course you are right he would 've been 77+...................the mystery deepens. Was it a member of his family who asked you to do the search?
