A BRYNITHEL man has gained a qualification equivalent to a degree at the age of 82.
Jack Wanklyn gained the English Literature qualification in a cap and gown ceremony after enrolling on a course at his local community centre.
Mr Wanklyn, who retired as a manager from Llanwern Steelworks, picked up the qualifications after four years of hard work. He is heavily involved with Abertillery Orpheus Choir and he is the chairman of Brynithel Community Centre.
“When they announced that they would be holding the course at the centre I thought I should attend the first class because I was chair of the centre,” Mr Wanklyn said.
“After the first class I was hooked. We had some of the best tutors and the classes were very interesting.”
Asked how he felt about his achievement, Mr Wanklyn, who lives with his wife Doreen, said: “It just goes to show that age is no barrier.
“I hope my story will encourage other people to take up similar courses.”
