EBBW Vale’s former Steel Works could be getting a visitor centre, complete with pubic records and facilities for people to trace their family history.
The development would form part of the masterplan for The Works, as part of ongoing regeneration of the site over the next nine years.
Plans would involve building a two-storey, 1,703 sq metre extension and refurbishing the Grade II listed General Office building.
Car parking for 41 cars, six disabled bays and two coaches would also be built next to the offices.
Should plans get underway, it would house the Gwent Records Office, including an archive, genealogy facilities and a conservation studio.
The proposed visitor centre would feature a cafe and restaurant and a steelworks exhibition featuring artefacts from the Ebbw Vale Archive Trust.
Plans for the extension are to build it in a modern-style to contrast with the existing building.
Materials planned for the development include aluminium, red steel panels and a green ‘living’ roof.
The planning committee will consider the plans in a meeting on Thursday.
A report recommends plans are given the go-ahead, subject to certain conditions being met.
These include using protective measure to ensure no building work damages the listed building, approval is given by the planning authority about the colours for external murals and any damage done is repaired using original materials.

Plans have been submitted to convert Blaentillery Working Men’s Club, in Rosegreen Cottages.
The two-storey building has a lounge and bar on the ground floor, as well as a concert room on the first floor. There is also a beer garden at the back of the building.
The plans do not involved changing the exterior of the building.
One response to the plans was sent to the council, a resident expressing concern that the move would bring more noise and traffic to the street, and parking.
Despite this, a report recommend the plans are given the go-ahead as the proposal does not differ greatly from what the building was previously used for.
