AN OFFICIAL book of competitions has been released ahead of our Blaenau Gwent and Heads of the Valleys 2010 National Eisteddfod of Wales.

The 100-page listing is packed with details on every single one of the competitions that will be open for entries for when the biggest Welsh Festival comes to town.

Here at the Gazette we’re spoiling our readers with a sneak preview into the new release.

The competitions are split into three categories – music, literature and arts and crafts.

Here are some of the highlights

n Four brass band competitions

n Battle of the Bands (a 20- minute original set in Welsh)

n Choirs (ladies, male voice and mixed)

n Soloists (including the prestigious David Ellis Blue Ribbon)

n Dance (disco and folk sections)

n Drama (The Richard Burton Memorial Prize)

n Recitation

n The Crown (prestigious prize for a collection of poems)

n The Chair (a poem in strict verse of no more than 200 words)

And as part of the visual arts exhibition section:

n Fine art (the gold medal comes with a £5,000 prize)

n Craft and design (the gold medal also carries a £5000 prize)

There are a variety of more prizes lined up and are due to be announced nearer to the date of the event.

There will also be a number of scholarships in various disciplines up for grabs.

All competitions are filmed for broadcast, and competitors come from all over Wales.

Let’s make sure Blaenau Gwent gives the rest of the country a run for their money in the talent stakes, and start getting your entries sorted.

The closing date for the written competitions will be April 1, and May 1 for the stage entries. All entries for the Visual Arts Exhibition will need to be received by February 14, 2010.

There is varying entry fees and these, and the application process is explained fully in the book.

The competitions list was officially presented to the Archdruid by Richard Davies, the chairman of the Executive Committee, during the Proclamation Ceremony in Ebbw Vale last month.

If you want to get your hands on a copy, it is now available to buy by logging on to www.eisteddfod.org.uk, calling 029 206 3777 or popping into Siopa Ganolfan in Merthyr Tydfil.

The book is priced at £3.
