Hello, this my first time on this forum and I am hoping someone will be able to help. I am searching for any information on my Paternal Grandfather who lived in Abertillery as a young man in the early 1920's. His family apparently owned a Furniture shop - Joseph and Faulkner or similar. We believe he went to America sometime after 1921/1922. We also think his name was Saul Joseph but this may here-say!
My Dad - Peter Edwards b. January 1922 - died not knowing who his father was. He was brought up by his mother and her  relatives and took the name Edwards and my mother Rhona both went to Abertillery Grammar School. My Maternal Grandparents were William and Rose Mills of Gladstone Street.
This might all come to nothing but I would like to try!
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Believe it was Joseph & Falkman, and Joseph Falkman was residing at 73 Princess Street, Abertillery in early 1904.

The furniture business moved about a bit, Foundry Bridge, Arcade, Church Street to name but three.
Joseph Falkman's wife was named Annie, she died in Newport in 1918, their children were named Lionel, Caversham and Leah.
Mr S Joseph lived at 164 Richmond Road, Six Bells, his eldest daughter was called Edith and he also had a son Norman.

Thank you so much! I have today researched the Falkmans and while very interesting, particularly Lional, I don't think they are family, the Joseph link looks more promising but can't find much information without delving deeper.

William davies Mills married Rose Conley lived in Clarence Road Aertillery on 1911 Census says William born Cornwall Rose Mountain Ash Glamorgan.  One child on 1911 William Raymond aged 3 is this right family?  Will look at Josephs emigrating to USA - however at moment cant find a Saul Joseph born in Abertillery.

Thank you, yes they are my grandparents. Have come up against a brick wall with regard to the Josephs - think the First  name could be wrong but will try another tack, As stoob mentioned Mr. S Joseph was co owner of the Furniture store and I'm trying to find more on him. Am so grateful  for your input and impressed with this forum. Out of interest do you both still live in Abertillery? Think we will have to visit to continue this quest.

1911 Census Joseph Simons Furniture Dealer - living in Bishops House High St Abertillery - this could be the Joseph of Joseph and falkmans Furniture Shop. In which case your Josephs may not be related to that line -  or the father of peter could be Simons?

Mr. S Joseph & Mrs. R. Joseph who were living in Richmond Road in 1922 had a Cardiff address in 1950.

Thank you, that's interesting information, it could be why the trail has ended. Will look at the Simons although it was "Joseph" Falkman so always thought Joseph should be a surname. The Jewish Chronical was helpful too. The Joseph's from Richmond road had a Port Talbot link too and they were Clothiers? Wondered if this could mean upholsterers. Am now looking at my Grandmothers side but cannot find out her maiden name yet. Maybe schools might have a clue. Thank you so much for your help.

1907 Cope's trade directory, Furniture Dealer, N Joseph 18 Market Street, Abertillery.
In 1901 Kellys trade directory, Joseph Falkman was dealing furniture in The Arcade and a Marl Joseph was a clothier in Market Street.
You can see most of those on line, just google historical trade directories and I go by location.

The family living at 164 Richmond Road 1922-1930 had the surname Marl.
Joseph Marl, Dora Marl, Louis Marl and Kate Marl.
