Idea  DID MR BUDD DO MUSIC?

I READ THE LIST OF TEACHERS - I CAN'T SEE FACES THOUGH VERY WELL,
I STUDIED SOCIOLOGY LATER ON AND WENT TO NANTYGLO SCHOOL TO INTERVIEW CLEM COLOMBO AS PART OF MY COURSE - I ASKED HIM ABOUT THE LEVEL OF VIOLENCE AT NANTYGLO, A BREEZE WAS BLOWING THROUGH A BROKEN WINDOW BEHIND HIM AT THE TIME, AS HE SAID" WHAT VIOLENCE?" - JUST THEN A COUPLE OF COPPERS BURST INTO THE ROOM WITH A STRUGGLING YOUTH IN TOW!

He did and for some years he was the conductor of Abertillery Orpheus I think.

Clem raided the Common Room once while me and the boys were playing cards. "What are you doing Rocke ?" he asked.
'Playing cards Sir'  said I.

One of the lads quipped 'Good one Dai, he might not have noticed', at which Clem went mad and made us listen to what seemed like a 2-hour sermon in his office.

I didn't dare tell him of the benefits of playing cards - maths, statistics ( theory of probability ), psychology, sociology etc. etc.

Embarassed  in fairness that generation of teachers helped me immensely when i was there and i wonder hoe good they are today. Clem was something of a Wye River boatman - we saw these guys as teachers but they , like us had lives of thier own  - Clem probably went home and said " i'm sick of Rocke getting the best hands"

Dr Colombo (initials KFC I think  Laughing ) was one of the two teachers I had who wore the traditional graduation robes. The other was Barry Sutton who taught me French and German at Roseheyworth. He's a Labour councillor these day and although I haven't seen him for a few years I always got on very well with him in my post-school life.

You're right Philby (apart from the best hands ).
I do remember Steve Downes pitching me in one time at Don.

He pitched Spades and I just happened to have A, K, Q, J and 9 if I remember.

First experience I ever got of supporting one's fellows, Steve Downes.
Cotty, Cardwell and Prendergast did him proud and I met them because of Steve.

Almost always got his own back at Chess mind you, God bless him.

DON'T say 'Mr Nash'.
I think he upset someone at Aber Comp, unless it's a different 'Phil' !
