THE FIFTH Wales Valleys Walking Festival gets underway next month, with walks taking place across five South Wales counties including Blaenau Gwent.
There will be opportunities to explore historic and archaeological sites, wander through peaceful villages, learn about local wildlife or simply take in the views guided by experienced and enthusiastic guides.
The Blaenau Gwent walks start today, Wednesday with a cultural and natural history trek in the of the Tyleri Valley, offering great views of the Blaenafon World Heritage Site.
This walk will take around two hours and is four miles long. To join in meet at 1.30pm at Cwmtillery Lakes.
They continue next Monday, September 14 with the Fothergill Trail exploring the tramroads and ironworks of Beaufort Wells, Sirhowy and Dukestown.
This walk takes around two hours and is just over six miles long. Meet at 1.30pm at Railway Terrace, Trefil.
On Tuesday, September 15, the festival takes in the Kendall and Darby Trails allowing enthusiasts to explore the tramroads, feeder ponds and the ironworks of Rassau, Ebbw Vale and Nantyglo. This walk will take around five hours and is six miles long. Please bring a packed lunch. Meet at 10am at the Civic Centre, Ebbw Vale.
Next Wednesday, September 16 sees The Bailey Trails a walk that explores the industrial archaeology associated with Joseph and Crawshay Bailey.It takes around five hours and is six miles long. Again bring a packed lunch and this time meet at 10am at Brynmawr Museum.
The final walk is on Friday, September 18 along the upland archaeology of Trefil from Celtic and medieval to Victorian times. The walk will take around five hours and is six miles. You’ll need a packed lunch.Booking on the walks is essential. For details go to www.wisdomandwalks.co.uk
