Criminals are targeting Ford car radios in the belief that the microchips they contain can be used to gain free access to satellite TV channels.
South Wales Police believe the bizarre and completely unfounded rumour is responsible for more than 200 thefts from vehicles over three nights in Cardiff last week.
Ford UK completely dismissed the idea that its car radios contain anything at all that could give free access to satellite TV.
Chief Superintendent Bob Evans, of South Wales Police, said: "It works out that we had almost four times the recorded rate of car crime.
"We have spoken to all parties concerned, including Ford and the satellite providers, and can only conclude that this is nothing more than an urban myth and the microchip cannot be used in this way.''
Paul Wilson, of Ford UK, said: "We despair at this one because it is a real urban myth.
Surely one of the most popular area for urban myths is schools. Don't know about you lot but I remember being regaled with stories about having my head flushed down the toilet and being thrown over the wall before starting at the British and similar stories before heading for Nantyglo.comp. Happy days eh?

I was told exactly this story by a colleague in work sometime after the 9/11 attack. In this case it was her brother working in London who had given someone their dropped wallet back. To be honest I was amazed she seemed to be taking it so seriously, not because I found it hard to believe anyone would be plotting to attack London but just becasue it had urbal myth written all over it.

It was interesting to read some of the stories on that site straight after 9/11 if you believed half of them it was amazing how most of America did'nt know that the atrocities were about to happen.
