Feels like I've had 5 weeks of work all in one. No wonder council meetings cease for August.
My first meeting Monday was as part of Communities First to discusss the Calon Project, creating a centre at the Jim Owen which hopefully will be a springboard for many countryside activities. Unfortunately I missed it due to one of my daughters needing urgent dental treatment.
Pity really because there were a few things I needed to get on top of ( more of that later ). However Cllr. Steve Bard said it all and put things straight I gather.
Later that afternoon was our regular Leisure Exec. briefing. It seems that the Triathlon at Brynbach Park was very well received and we've had good and very positive feedback about the Blues Festival, especially from the campers. The financial state looks very good as well so let's hope we can expand a little more next year and get Aber on a wider map.
Our officers have worked the oracle and come up with a plan that will enable the Indoor Bowls Club to remain at the old Leisure centre for bext season. That means that the Task & Finish Group I chair doesn't have to monitor the situation until the Autumn, when we'll be asking to see what progress is being made towards a permanent solution.
Tuesday was our Ed & Leisure Scrutiny Committee. Well it was actually Education and nothing else this month. A problem with fencing at a school in Ebbw Vale has been sorted, after a few years apparently. The main report was concerning Coleg Gwent's decision to withdraw the subsidy it makes to young people attending it.
There's no compulsion on a tertiary college to provide transport but CG has been running a scheme whereby it gets a special deal from Stagecoach for Season Tickets. Individual Councils donate a sum per pupil. We award each student ( no matter where they attend ) £225 per term ( the highest of the greater Gwent authorities ) and up until now CG has been making up the remainder required for the Season Ticket. Now they're cutting back on it, leaving students with a shortfall.
CG might have some funds available via WAG to help students who are left in a precarious position. We're keen to ensure these young people know what's available to them.
