Abertillery has become a sad ghost town, which is not worth a visit, unless you fancy a bag of chips or a keebab. How can the shops that we have,( very few), survive if other new shops are not in place in order to attract custom to the area? I have been to Town, ( if you can still call it that) today. Woolworths was selling off its fixtures and fittings, to leave an empty shop and more people out of work. Now Woolies is gone, where will we buy a needle and cotton, or a decent birthday card?? Earlier in the day i went for a walk up to Cwmtillery Lakes. It was beautiful, and then a trip to town to just brings you down. Other velleys towns appear to attract new business, but we are left to rot. How depressing.
unfortunately Lynne, what you say is very true and thats the general opinion of most people. when you think what "Aber" was like like years ago compared to to now its enough to make you weep.
It's supply and demand must be a great demand for fast food outlets in Abertillery, comfort eating maybe. Whilst I agree, we are not the only valley town with the same problems, at Abergavenny this week there are notices everywhere to the same effect..Market town not ghost town.. shops not lots. Small businesses there are suffering the same fate with rents and rates as well as competion form the bigger shopping outlets, cafe's and resturants. Abergavenny is a well established tourist town and very popular with local people for shopping if they can't survive what hope for us.
Mr. Monk we have discussed this in length before maybe you missed this topic first time round. Since it's been brought up again what feasable sugestions do you have for revitalising the town apart from demolishing Ebbw Vale _________________ My life is no rehearsal There'll be no curtain call encore, so I've thrown my screwed up script away to ad lib my life once more!
I am astonished (and disappointed) the coffee shop proposal got turned down, although I admit I don't know the full details so I may be being unfair.
As I understood it, it sounded along the lines of Cafe Nero, Coffee #1, etc. I am not a big fan of these chains but they do at least serve decent fresh coffee which, to my knowledge, is not served in any of Abertillery's cafes?
Maybe the council felt our taste buds aren't up to the shock of the taste of good coffee Don't suppose you iknow the reason for the refusal Rockey? _________________ The compliments pass when the quality meet.
Adrian, Carolyn is right. I think the reason there have be so few replies to this thread is that the theme has been the subject of discussion on this board many times over the last few years. _________________ The compliments pass when the quality meet.
The thing with Abertyleri is that there is nothing here! We have about three "hair salons," three pharmacies, multiple card shops, eight (that's right, EIGHT) fast food take aways (they cannot be called restaurants!), and about eight clubs/pubs.
So, what is there for the out of town tourist to do in Abertyleri? Well, here's how I see it;
Got get your nails done first, pop into one of the local chippies to get a kebab, then go to a pharmacy because you're feeling ill from said kebab, but bugger it; go to the pub and get smashed.
Welcome to Abertyleri!
Or....... you can pick a fight with one of the hundreds of chavs or boy racers that seem to hang around every single day. But please, don't think that you can do this ONLY on a weekend - no, just go up and make an appointment.
Though town aside, I do think that there is some sort of "street" spirit (as community spirit has long gone these days), and that there are some very nice people in Abertyleri, and I know you all - I worked in Woolies remember, hahaha.

The application was approved Martyn ( and others ).
I remember reading that Officers were recommending approval but there was a petition against it.
However, permission was given. _________________ Rocke
It must be Nicky Grist butchers shop thats being turned into the new eatery I would think because as I was passing through town last week there was a guy putting up the new sign and it said hot and cold freshly made baguettes.

Not a coffee shop then? _________________ The compliments pass when the quality meet.
My understanding ( 2nd/3rd - perhaps even 10th - hand ) is that it is to be more of a coffee/tea shop than a cafe ie. no burgers and chips and the like. This is supported by the fact that the new proprietor runs the chippie next door.
I don't really know any more than that.
If I'm around and they're working in there I'll ask. I'm sure the proprietor wouldn't mind the news being spread.
Perhaps someone else will get there before me ? _________________ Rocke
who knows, they might even start selling panini's?!? I once tried to order one at The Express cafe after the new menu was launched last year and the girl serving stared at me open mouthed whilst I explained what it was. Needless to say I had a chip butty in the end

Thats a brilliant idea, mr monk, if they kept the ambulances there they could use them in the event someone's newly manicured nail getting damaged.
The ambulance could be scrambled to race the victim back there.
and an emergency file and polish carried out.
I do not mean to sound or be sexist, as many men have their nails done these days.
And in a pre-emptive reply to what i believe would be your next question Mr monk NO i do not have my nails manicured
