|THE Slugfest music festival will be celebrating its third birthday in style this year – with a whopping 26 bands appearing at two Abertillery venues over three days.
Kicking off on Friday, July 23, at the Dolls House, six bands will offer the first onslaught of the best local punk and metal on offer. Among the Friday night line-up, starting at 7pm, will be locals Death Bullet, Merthyr’s Foreign Legion and Caldicot thrashers Mutator.
The next day will see traditional all-day shenanigans at The Mount from 1.30pm, with a barbecue, loads of vegan and vegetarian food, face-painting and all manner of fun and games, as well as 15 bands.
The line-up includes local favourites such as Lifer, Fell On Black Days, Bad Sam and 8.4%.
From further afield are Bristol’s Gurkha, Rings Around Saturn and Disorder, and Coventry’s Scutty Neighbours.
On the Sunday, The Mount will host the Slugfest Acoustic Club from 2pm, featuring numerous floor players and bands, with Lees Amigos headlining the afternoon’s proceedings. Rounding off the whole weekend, The Dolls House will host five bands from 7pm, including thrashers Outgunned and Valleys metallers Hellbound.
There is free entry to all venues and all profits will go to Tredegar-based charity Hospice Of The Valleys, which provides care for people with life-threatening illnesses across Blaenau Gwent.
Slugfest started out as a 40th-birthday bash for two Abertillery locals and has since become something of a local institution. Last year’s event raised more than £1,000 for the hospice and saw two great days featuring 15 bands across the two venues.
