Abertillery ex-pat gets MBEFormer Abertillery rugby player and Glamorgan Wanderers and Glamorgan County player Ralph Henderson recieved his MBE at investiture at Buckingham Palace where his honour was presented by the Queen. Mr Henderson is deputy head at William Edward's School in Stifford Clays Essex and was awarded the accolade for services to education in the New Years Honours List.
The 59 year old holds the world record for the highest number of drop goals in one season. his 39 drop goal record was set in 1978 and remains un beaten. Mr Henderson was born in Abertillery, attended the local Grammar School from 1960 - 1967 then went to Cardiff College of Education where he played rugby for Glamorgan during that time. He later moved to Essex in 1970 to become a teacher, became deputy head in 1989 and has been at the same school for over 30 years. He is still proud of his Abertillery roots where his brothers and sister still live locally and they are all extremely proud of his achievement at receiving this prestigious award. Just before the Easter break he was at the school working as normal when the fire alarms were set of and immediately went to the assembly hall to check procedures were being followed.
