Stoob,
many thanks for such lovely photos of the park - also the old swimming pool before the changing rooms and terrace was built. Do you know what year the pool opened? Its loss is really sad. Wasn't there subsidence? Surely that could have been rectified.

Will check the date for you, unfortunately a few drowned in both the park and institute baths.

Stoob,
I can't recall the Institute. Was that another outdoor pool?
Also a pity the old lido at Six Bells fell into deriliction. Specially after the miners' hard graft in building it. I always found the ruins of it very melancholy.
By the way, where was the gated entry to the park? I don't ever recall it.

It was a very large park best part of a century back with the entrance half way up Glandwr Street. Filing system leaves a lot to be desired at the minute with bits of paper all over the place, so I'll find some dates and pictures another time.
Aberillery had excellent swimming and water polo sides in the 1930's who were based at the Institute. There was a big fire there in 1951 and although they gave it a bit of a makeover it never got back to it's best.

Talking of the 'stute' and a makeover. The scaffolding is up and an external makeover is underway  Very Happy

It seems, Stoob, as if you and I were born too late to appreciate the park in its glory days!!
You say it was very large a century ago - was some of it redeveloped for some other purpose then? Where was the bandstand situated?

Abertillery Park

Landscaping I believe "Mal"
Bandstand wasn't there long Anthony, bottom end of the Cricket pitch, believe they moved the bowling green a few times in the early years.

This is the "artists" impression..

Hiya Mal

Are you settled in Aber now? If so and you fancy a pub quiz, pop along to the Commercial about 9pm. We could do with someone brainy on our team Smile

Hiya Martyn
All settled in thanks. Is it tonight at the Commercial?  I'm working lates for the next 3 weeks!!
martyn142

Yeah tonight Mal. Every Thursday. It would be good if you could make it some time - we've always got a regular core but others come and go as and when.

Glad to hear you're finally settled in  Very Happy

Apologies to stoob and Anthony for diverting the thread.

Anthony - The park baths were officially opened on 03 September 1900 by Daniel Lewis JP.
Believe the gymnasium at the Institute was opened in 1902 and the swimming pool in 1908.
