Abertillery War Memorial breaks the law ???????

Well, not the War memorial itself of course, but the stewards of it, namely Abertillery & Llanhilleth Community Council.

The Disability Discrimination Act ('DDA') makes it an offence for public bodies not to have 'disabled access' to any or all of its property.

That's not just offices etc. but any public space - such as er.... a War Memorial.

Imagine this extremely embarrassing scenario:

A member of the Armed Forces has to use a wheelchair as the result of an injury sustained whilst on active service. They wish to come and lay a wreath at the annual Remembrance Day service, only to find that they have no way of doing so.

Apparently the fools 'on the council' (for that's what anyone who comes up with this reason is) have said that it might not be possible 'because of regulations governing the maximum gradient for disabled access'.

If I remember correctly there's 3 small steps near the gate and another 2 or 3 near the memorial itself.
I'd say the base of the memorial is no more than about 2-3 feet above the entrance gate

The gate is what - 12 yards from the memorial ? (It's probably slightly farther than penalty spot to goal and also you can park 3 and a bit cars on the road alongside).

So, 1 yard difference in height and about 12 yards to make it up.
I make that a 1-in-12 slope.

Which is well inside the 'regulations'.

The men named on our War Memorial died in the cause of freedom, not to give faceless council workers and toothless politicans the freedom to prevent any and ALL persons persons from paying  their respects.

Oh - and I recall Jubilee Square having to be locked because there was no disabled access.
Dare the town council do that in this instance ?

Latest position on our War Memorial is:

1) Weeds and couch grass heavily intertwined with the pansies and other flowers. Some weeds are around 18-24 ins high.

2) The council (not sure which, since A & L seems to be heavily involving BG officers) are maintaining that disabled access cannot be done.
Unfortunately they don't know the rules - there are no exemptions.
MAKE IT WORK.

Hint - what has my part of Alma St, George Daggar Avenue, Morley Rd and a lot of other streets in Aber got in common?

Answer - they have chairlifts to enable occupants to have wheelchair access to their front doors from off the street, approx 5-6 ft lower.
The grounds of our War memorial are approx. half that.

Next stop, the press I think.
And it's the TOWN council's responsibility in law.
