Ale !!!!Can Abertyleri boast a public house that serves a variety of "Real" Cask Ales ?
If not, where is the nearest watering hole that does ?

Not a variety no, but the Commercial normally has a guest ale and it is usually pretty good.
I'm not sure about the nearest other than that but I should think Brynmawr. Don't know if it still does, but Y Gwesty used to stock nice beers, including Felinfoel.

I didn't realise there were so many.
btw The Mersh provides free football, rugby, horse racing - and this weekend cricket, followed by a rock-oriented jukebox, unless the bar staff get their hands on it first.
However, the front and back lounges are civilised.

Thanks Rocke for that info.. I have tried the Wye Valley Butty Bach in a pub at Symond's Yat East and Usk.. Not bad...
By the way the Castle Inn has now reopened in Twyn Square, Usk.

Sophisticated means up yourself in my book, thankfully I am not. What is so sophisticated about real ale

LINK Topics Ale@ CCTV Maybe the woman being romantic on the foundry bridge had her sophistication clouded because she'd been on the woodpecker or perhaps woodpecker and black but I don't think the mersh serves cocktails The only voyerism I induldge in is the mirror above our bed

Do they have real ales on cask? I know they've got a good selection of bottles. It's a really nice walk over too.

Not sure if cask is an option but as you say they had more variety in bottles than i can drink in a night (bit of a lightweight).
It's a nice pub in a nice setting and a worthy stopping point on any walk.
I was in awe of there variety of whiskey/whisky

We were over one evening a while back and there were a group of men from the Railway society having a drink. They had their train parked outside. Brilliant!

I don't know if things have changed but quite a few years ago we decided to walk over to the Whistle. It was a lovely sunny day with beautiful views all around and the promise of a nice cold drink at the other end.We got to the point where you can actually see the pub and very nearly broke into a run.It was going on for 1 o clock ,we walked across the car park tried the door and it was locked ,imagine the sinking feeling,we knocked on the door and eventually someone appeared at a window and told us they only opened in the day on a Sunday. We couldn't even get a glass of water, let alone a nice pint.
Anyway we walked on to the Racehorse and managed to get a drink there and a bag of crisps, even though it was supposed to be shut I think.
From there we walked down into Brynmawr and phoned my son to come and pick us up at my brothers house.
You live and learn ,we never tried it again, the walk or the pub.

If you want a good firkin of ale try brewing your own it's inexpensive easy to do & good strength / quality. A bi-product is that after a few jars you will forget the rubbish Bryn Trefil has posted on the forum

Where is your loyalty to our established pub's? Because thier beer is expensive tasteless and they have a couldn't care- less attitude to our custom why should we all look forward to Spoons with thier inexpensive tasty beer and polite staff? The answer is in the question

My company is due to relocate offices on that weekend and I have offered to help. I hadn't realised there was a rugby international on (pretty obvious really lol) but at least I'll have somewhere decent to slake my thirst after a weekend humping furniture, computers, etc around
