Better an engine driver than a Guardianista!

Quote:
Councils are run for the benefit of those who work there, not for people who pay for them. Is it any wonder council tax has doubled under Labour?

So remote have local authorities become from the paying public, in political and geographical terms, that few think it even worth bothering voting in local elections any more, because they don't believe it will make the slightest difference.

Turnout has dropped so low that there's talk of bribing people to vote by giving them free doughnuts and lottery tickets.

Is this really why women chained themselves to railings and dived under racehorses?

Now, in an outrageous scam, the Government is proposing to jack up town hall allowances and salaries still further and give councillors a £10,000 "parachute payment" when they're kicked out of office.

Er, this is from that well-known bastion of balanced reporting, the Daily Mail, isn`t it? Take with large pinch of salt then go and lie down.

If you read the full article you will find it is quite informative AND has some semblance of the truth with reference to public servants of yesteryear compared to the trough swilling non entities we have now !! Exclamation

I`ve read it. What a well-balanced and mature article. Let`s bring back the town clerk, branch lines and the nit nurse. Give every lesbian a broom. Everything will be peachy. I looked hard for the bit about prudent, money-conscious Conservative councils where all is well with the world but I must have missed it. Damn this Labour government.
Manawydan

It was a non-political article ? Basically stating that in days gone by serving the community was a voluntary part time vocation, serving the community in which you lived no matter what political ilk. I think that the Abertillery area was well looked after in terms of public amenities during these times. Ironic that the Labour government and it's council cronies have been unable to deliver !! The Conservatives were not much better but then never having had a Conservative run council in Abertillery there's no point in you running a comparison. As my dad used to say 'If the Labour candidate was a dead sheep, it would get voted in' Exclamation

In the Daily Mail? Whatever next?

It is the same story all over Britain once we had bakers and builders now we have fixers and fiddlers, there is no comparison no matter who is in power. Traditional labour values have long taken a hike and our public services and NHS with it.

Two years ago following their demise in the General Election BGCBC advertized for a  Chief People's Personnel Officer or some such other title, a 60K position but who is he/she? where is he/she? what does he/she do?  Did we really need this extra tier of management it is only a small borough?  Who pays his/her salery.

From my experience with the NHS that money would help fund the training of a few more of our own nurses or care workers and place a few more on the wards or nursing homes. There is too much reliance on agency staff who are called in on a staff shortage but either because of "elf n Saftey" regulations or grading issues are often unable to undertake some of the nursing procedures required at the time, yet double the cost.
