Blind referees!I started at Caerleon Training College in September 1957.
On the Saturday before I went to watch Aber play. I stood on the touchline in front of the stand and hurled abuse at the referee with a venom. I informed him that he was the blindest referee ever to take to a rugby field and that included all the Irish ones! He was Mr D. C. Joynson of Rogerstone, aka Cyril. When the linesout came near me he didn't say anything, he just eyeballed me.
The next week I packed my bags and caught the train to Newport and Caerleon. I started the long lonely trek up the drive, a solitary figure. After a while I looked up and there was another solitary figure coming down the drive towards me. As he got closer I began to recognise him as D.C.Joynson, lecturer in Health Education at Caerleon College. Sh*t! As we passed each other he looked at me and smiled. I just thought, "what goes around comes around". I wonder what happenned to his whistle - I didn't like to ask!
