Car ParkingI know this has probably been covered on the forum before, but I am frustrated at the lack of car parking in Abertillery on Sundays.
I am the owner of The Dolls House, and we are trying all sorts of things to get trade back into the town. We are now serving Sunday Lunches, but because the council shut the car park on the Foundry Bridge, there is nowhere to park.
We had a Christening party at the pub a few weeks ago. The party organisers asked if we could get the car park opened for a few hours as they had family travelling from afar. I phoned the council but they said no as there was no one available to open and close the car park.
I now have to park on yellow lines on Sundays to carry out my business.

I hadn't realised it was closed on Sundays. Seems a hell of a waste of a useful facility to me.

Anyone know the current status of the multi storey where the old health centre was,I never know whether it's open or not.I know it was a dodgy place to park,it now seems we have carparks either side of the bridge and yet at certain times at least people cannot park in them

It seems that a couple of years back when the decision was taken to lock the car parks, the Arcade etc. the times were set with regard to the costs involved in opening, so Sundays were out because of double time, travelling costs etc. ( I know, 'typical Council' ).
The multi-storey isn't a problem because the lower level is always open.
Anyway, I've rung the council and got the low-down and also possible options. I'll pass all this on to the proper councillors ( John Taylor & Steve Bard ) since that car park is on their patch as it were and it's not for me to interfere in their Ward.

Oops, missed out replying to this query Ian.
As I understand it's the same as the other car parks, although you can't get any pedestrian access when it's closed.
However, I agree that it isn't the best place to leave a car, out of sight etc.
I think I'm right in saying that the original use of this car park was for relatively short stays, close to the Health Centre and town, and also for the staff of Anvil Court ( whatever was in there ).
That would mean it wasn't that much of a security issue because of it being in constant use.

I have followed previous parking threads two ideas I like are painted parking bays and dedicated parking areas for any form of commercial vehicle This would free up spaces for residents and make it easier for emergency vehicles Tonight in the parking bay on Division St 3 vehicles are parked in such a way that they are taking up 5 or possibly 6 spaces One is a council van which may not move until Monday Why are we subsidising council workers commuting costs? Leave the vehicles at the depot and use the money saved to----------------KEEP THE STREET LIGHTS ON

So what happen when there's a traffic accident and a road needs clearing of debris ?
Or elderly Mrs Jones has a boiler springing a leak in her council flat ?
Do you expect the public to wait an additional 30 mins or so for our employee to get to the depot, collect the relevant vehicle and then attend the scene ?
And the additional cost of:
1) paying for the employee to travel to the depot to pick up his/her vehicle;
2) paying for calling out a depot keyholder to open it up ?
'struth harry - even the Taxman allows employees to take home our vehicles without surcharging them for using company vehicles !!
On a more pertinent note, this is down to educating the prats who park in such a way not to do so.
However, there is another possibility.
Have you thought that a Fiesta might be parked in the space vacated by a van ?

Harry we have the same with us mate 3 cars taking up space of 5 and I have to say its not a young person thing its all ages its a mix of inconsiderate people and plain ignorant self centred gits which include those who run out to move there car a few feet every time someone pulls out revenge can be sweet especially if u have the time to get these gits back but two wrongs never make it right.
anyway enough of me ranting afternoon shift blues etc goodnight all

Rocke It would be quite easy for me to monitor the council vans over several weeks to prove the vast majority of them do not need to be brought home while I did it I could report them for illegal parking blocking pavements parked on junctions etc It's a nice day I could start now

The car park was there before the building of Anvil Court and a white elephant from the start. A reasonable sized car could not manouver the bends without ripping their fender off, the lights were contantly vanadlised, the walk way littered with cans, vomit, dogs mess and needles and stank of urine and the lift half way through construction.
I used to take a short cut down through there to visit the library and the offices in the old youth club which was very handy but it became to unsafe to use you never knew who was hanging around down there especially in the walk way. It was hardley ever used by people wanting to park there was no parking attendent and out of sight of the then proposed CCTV

Carolyn I have traveled extensively yet when returned home I have never used "Fender and Walkway " Are you "Jetlaged" from a long reach flight?

I think it was there to serve the supermarket the council was hoping to attract ( rumours going around years ago ). However, whenever I've used it I've not experienced anyone or anything that would lead to fear in a person. This is probably due to the fact that 1) there's virtually no cars parked in it; and 2) there's reasonable usage of the lift, mostly by Anvil Court staff and/or visitors, so anyone planning mischief stays clear.
However, on the whole I'd say your opinion of 'white elephant' is near the mark.

I was talking about the time it was first built as a multi story car park. I have not been in the place for a good number of years now so could not comment on it's present condition

Never parked there is my guess, wonder why.
The steps leading down from Church Street are no longer there since the building and area front of the post office is built where they once were. You would have to walk down via the car park area if you were to go down that way now unless there is public access via the lift. Not being a driver not checked it out since they built Anvil Court
