coed lorwg

During the second world war my father was evacuated from Tooting in London to Abertillery. He has told me that he was evacuated to a big house which was run by a couple from Sussex called Knot(t).
He believes that the house was knocked down and a car park is now on the spot.

Further enquiries have suggested it may have been called Coed Lorwg but I would like some infomation on it and possibly the owners as well.

Coed iorwg

Hi Gareth,

Yes you are correct - Coed Iorwg or Ivy House was at number 30 High Street according to the census of 1901 (under Coed Jory) when a JP lived there (Edmund Jones Williams).  It was as you say used for evacuees during the war and a very unattractive (in my opinion) car park occupies the space nowadays.

It is mentioned in my family history also,as my grandfather Leslie Price (whose family were also from Abertillery) worked at Coed Iorwg during the war years as a Superintendent (according to my Gran).  My Dad also remembers it (he bears a scar on his eyebrow where he was accidentally hit by one of the evacuees when the evacuee was chopping wood) but when we visited Abertillery in 2006 we could find no-one who remembered the car park as Coed Iorwg.

Outside of my family, your post is the first mention that I have heard of the place as an evacuee location.

Best of luck
Helen
