Councillor won’t work with Labour

Quote:
AN Independent councillor has left the Partnership Group after refusing to work with the Labour Party.

Cwmtillery ward councillor Mark Edwards has stepped away from the group after their decision to integrate several Labour councillors in the wake of Des Hillman’s resignation from the leadership.

And as Coun Edwards assured his constituents it wouldn’t affect the work he does for them, he blasted his former group for getting in bed with the party they had battled nearly four years ago.

“I’m an independent, I’m not part of the Labour Party and I never will be,” said Coun Edwards.

“I find it really unpalatable as after three and a half years of achievements as an independent council, due to the political machinations of the Welsh Government, we are in a situation that the very existence of this borough is under threat, all because they want it back under Labour control.

“All this time, all we have had from Labour in opposition is moaning and criticism. They went so far as to refuse to attend meetings to put budgets together – but now they are in the executive, everybody is holding hands in the chambers.

“We have had decades of mismanagement from the Labour Party, that put Blaenau Gwent into the situation that it is today.

“Now we’ve started to make some real changes after making the tough decisions and they want to bask in the glory.”

Coun Edwards added his decision was in no way linked to the departure of Coun Hillman, and that he fully intended to continue his duties as a councillor to Cwmtillery.

And here it is:

Quote:
I’d like to comment on the announcement in last week’s edition regarding Cllr Mark Edwards leaving the Council’s Independent Group. I agree with most of his sentiments. People did not vote overwhelmingly for a change in the council, only to see the same old faces back before the end of term. I possibly feel stronger than him on this.
However, if we all simply up and left then the wealth of ideas and the progress made would vanish and the people of Blaenau Gwent would suffer. Mark was in part responsible for a new Absence Management process that has resulted in less jobs undone and roles unfulfilled because of long term sickness and a considerably higher number of people in work each day. Cllr Shirley Ford is another whose abilities are currently lost. This is because politics dictates that only those of the ruling group will have positions of influence (apart from the hotpotch in Blaenau Gwent of course ).

I wonder if that is the real problem. Every organisation needs new blood and new ideas, the drive and dynamism of ‘youth’, yet that has to be tempered by the wisdom and experience of those who are later in life. It is this vital combination of young hearts and old heads that has become unbalanced. Next year’s elections should not simply be about ‘Labour or non-Labour’ but about ‘Progressives and Traditionalists’ – and note I’ve used the word ‘and’. Blaenau Gwent badly needs both, in the correct mix. And both political groupings need them as well, just in case they attain power.

So, when the leaflets start coming through the door, look at your candidates in a different light.
"Is this one a wise head or simply stale?", "Is this one a radical or reckless?".
It would be an interesting Council that comes along as a result.

So, Lisa, what's your view then ?
Rocke
