Dai Davies on MP expenses

Dai davies on MP expenses :

Quote:
There are few things in politics which really get me tamping, but the issue of mis-guided expense claims by certain MPs  – is one of those things.

The mess that has been created by certain MPs ‘using’ the system has dragged the whole of politics down in every right-thinking person’s eyes in this country.

I have today (Tuesday, April 2Cool called for all MPs allowances, expenses, staff, and offices to be brought in to public ownership.

It goes without saying – having made that call - that I will be first in the queue to give up all allowances.

It is absolutely vital that we do everything we can to restore public confidence.

Those MPs who have undermined that confidence should remember: we are public servants; the public are under unprecedented stress in earning money; millions are losing their jobs; and for those reasons we must account for every public penny spent.

The idea that MPs clock-in and get a daily attendance allowance was, rightly, dismissed as unworkable, and likely to lead to even more public criticism.

What about the time – a very considerable amount in my case – spent in and around the constituency, at social, and other events. Would every minute we spend – be ‘clocked’?

As I say – unworkable!

My proposal goes much further, and would end all possible ‘abuse’ of the system.

MPs would be given ‘a basic wage’, no MP would ‘own’ a second home, all MPs staff, offices, and equipment would be owned, and paid for, by the country, which would control all costs, staff and employment contracts.

Next week I will reveal exactly what I have spent, and where any public money has been used.

Several times readers have asked to see information on my expenses. Having failed to take up my offer to come and inspect them at my office – I will now make everything public in the Gwent Gazette.

I will also make clear what I intend to do on a personal level to give a lead.

I sincerely, hope that every other MP will do the same.

Hope he succeeds.

It would be interesting to compare this governments expenses claims with previous ones. e.g. John Majors . I have also come to the conclusion that the only fair thing to do is give every employee in the country the same allowance as MPs - lets call it employment benefit.  Cool

A vote winner me thinks.. Wink

What is as bad as the near-criminal (and maybe in some cases literally criminal) abuse of the expenses system is that EVERY MP I have heard trying to defend themselves has blamed their abuse on that system rather than on their own greed and lack of morality.

The fact the system allows you to claim a house is your second home so you can claim the mortgage expenses and then redesignate it as your main residence to avoid Capital Gains Tax when you sell it doesn't mean you HAVE to do it. It's your choice. And they've chosen to do it because they are greedy and immoral.

God knows the Tories dragged the name of parliament through the mud when they were in power but the Labour party is giving them a run for their money. I didn't think my contempt for Gordon Brown and his cronies could sink any lower but, chwarae teg, Gordon you have managed it.

No doubt the bleating Labourites will shout ' The other parties are doing it too'. Does that make it any more acceptable? It makes you wonder if Guy Fawkes wasn't right after all.  Evil or Very Mad

I haven't seen Dai Davies' cliam but he infers he hasn't been cheating taxpayers as a lot of Labour MPs have. If that's so, good on you Dai, you've given me even more reason to vote for you.
