If I may introduce myself. My family name is Banner. My parents moved to Jersey in the Channel Islands in about 1959/60, so the Welsh side of my history is sparse to me. My Mother was born in Abertillery, her maiden name was Ruby Doreen Wilitshire. She always said her family lived in Cwm Street, and apparently Gran was a Doctor's Daughter 'Who married benaath herself'. Well I'd say she did all right with my Mum and the following on family.

Would anyone know where Cwm Street is? The male side of the family has researched relativly easily, the female side is proving awkward.
Forgot to add, Gran's maiden name , as far as I can work out was Samuels.

Hello Tony and welcome  Very Happy  I'm pretty sure that Cwm St was either the whole or part of what is now Somerset St. Until fairly recently, there was a street plaque high up on a house in Somerset St which said Cwm St. It seems to have disappeared now, presumably after renovation of the house.

Thanks Martyn! I have been banging heads trying to find it on the map.  Very Happy Back to the census records!
Just looked at Goggle Earth, Somerset Street fits the description, Mum always said the road whent on straight up the mountain.

Cwm St as you say became Somerset St.

Martyn after the last post by Tony B straight up the mountain, may it not have been Cwm Cottage Rd straight up.

Thanks Guys! Remeber , as usual, I'm going on things I was told many years ago. Mum died in Jersey in 1999. I belive my Grandfather worked at the Six Bells. Do you know if any records exist for the work force?

It did strike me that it didn't sound like Somerset St cowpat but, as you know, Cwm St is definitely Somerset St.

Tony - I'm pretty sure cowpat is right and the road you are talking about is Cwm Cottage Road which does indeed go straight up the mountain.

I take it Cowpat is a local name?  Very Happy

Thanks Aber,

Doing a bit of poking about, my Mother was born 1914, so assuming proprity, and you never know, Gran would have been 17 or 18 when married. I do have a very vauge recollection, and a very old photo somewhere, of their Golden Wedding, that would have been the early 1960's. So may well fit.

All the family were miners. My Farther always said I could do what I liked with my life, but never become a miner. His younger brother Ivor moved to Jersey in the early 1950's. Mum and Dad followed shortly afterwards. Trouble is I'm currently on the Mainland and no Chanel Island's records are on lline, so next trip back, into the archives!
