Foundry Bridge is falling down!

ESSENTIAL work on dismantling parts of the Foundry Bridge in Abertillery was completed.

Concrete beans, each around 100 ft long and weighing several tonnes, were lifted from the piers of the 60-year-old bridge and lowered into a concrete crusher.

A crane was erected last Wednesday, with work on removing and crushing the beams beginning on Thursday, and the last beam was removed on Sunday.

At least it means the traffic controls in the town centre have gone, according to the report.

It was a bit chaotic to say the least I was told that there were warning signs put up diverting traffic but kids had turned them round but can't say if that is true or not

So finally its been made official in the Argus that you can drive down high street. Pity it was on the same day they took the traffic lights away. Perhaps next time someone from the Highways department could let everyone in Abertillery in on the secret and not let us all have to guess what to do.

Bridge demolition heralds regeneration of Abertillery

TOWNSPEOPLE in Abertillery have been thanked for their co-operation during the removal of the old Foundry Bridge by a giant crane.

The 60-year-old bridge, which was removed to make way for a new bridge as part of the multi-million-pound regeneration of Abertillery, was successfully dismantled in six days.

Huge pre-stressed concrete beams, each measuring around 100ft and weighing several tonnes, were lifted from the piers of the old bridge structure and lowered into a concrete crusher.
