|A VALLEYS tour guide is hoping to get the people of Blaenau Gwent excited about their history once again, by planning a historical family festival in the area.
Abertillery’s Ivor Beynon is combining his love of history and the Welsh Valleys to organise a Chartist Festival in Blaenau Gwent.
Hoping to bring the area’s chartist history to the forefront, the secretary of Blaenau Gwent Chartist and Historical Society is planning a re-enactment to commemorate one of the biggest chartist uprisings in history, where thousands marched to Newport in an effort to liberate fellow chartists on November 4, 1839.
Currently in the planning stages, there will be a free public presentation on Thursday, March 17 at 5.30pm in the Ebbw Vale Institute, to get public input into the event.
Welsh history enthusiast Ivor, 42, said: “People don’t realise what our people went through, so we are inviting them to join in the event, to dress up in traditional Welsh Victorian dress, and help us re-enact these events.”
