IM TRYING TO FIND INFO ON MY MUMS FAMILY , THEIR SURNAME IS MEEK THERE WAS A ALFRED MEEK HE MARRIED ELIZEBETH EVANS THEY HAD MY GRANDFATHER ANDREW, CHARLES, SEWARD , MAY ,THERE MAY BE OTHERS, LIVED IN SIX BELLS AREA , THEY MAY HAVE HAD A BUSINESS WE THINK IT WAS A SWEET SHOP (MAY WE THINK OWNED THAT) MY GRANDFATHER ANDREW WORKED IN PITS HE ALSO PLAYED RUGBY ANDREW MOVED AWAY IN THE 1930S CAN ANYONE HELP

Hi, I went to junior school in Six Bells with a boy called Aiden Meek. I believe his family had a shop (originally the post office) in the small street opposite Browns Corner. The date I was at Six Bells junior school was between 1961 and 1965. I hope this helps

There was a sweet shop at the bottom of the two hills, Marlborough Rd and Bryngwyn Rd run by a family called Meek.. This would have been in the 60's, early 70's

I've rung my friend (originally from Six Bells but now lives in Cardiff ). Her Grandmother's sister Katie was married to Charlie Meek. Katie and her sister, Gladys Watkins nee Sailes had the sweet shop on Alexandra Road Six Bells at the bottom of the 2 hills.

Both Caroline and Tchambulie are correct the sweet shop is the second one down ,Meeks' as we called it as kids, and yeah it did have that parrot 1st time I went in there as a small kid the damn thing squarked out it was enough to make any kid have an accident, the first shop was a newsagents in the 60's 70's we knew it as Cleatons.

The second hand shop was run by the Gardener Family.
they had a few girls, I can remember Janet, Ann and there was a young one think she`d had polio. had irons on both legs when she was young
I,think I saw a shool photo of her at BrynGwyn school when she was older

The shop in the middle of Marlborough Road was Williams,run by
Cissie Williams, her husband Hector had the shop in Bryngwyn Road
The handicapped child was Jane the child of Mrs Williams sister Nancy and her husband who was Cyril Watkins the builder.

Thanks for that...as soon as I saw the name the brain cells fired up again. It was Ann Gardener who I remember. My first girlfriend I guess!! Embarassed

I dont remember the girl who had polio but that reminded me that the Turners in Eastville Road had a younger sister who had calipers and a blocked up shoe.
Where in SixBells did you live and when were you born? Did you go to Bryngwyn or the grammar?

I used to work with your Mum and dad in the Rolling Mill Oiginally from Bryngwyn Road --- can`t get used to the Haydn sorry!!!
I remembered after I posted the young girl with calipers was Frances,
been away from Abertillery over 20years now but lived in Newport the same time as your Mum ,when Avril was alive.

Ive been known as Haydn not Adrian for about 25 years now. It started as Ade while I was in the forces and progressed to Haydn. I still write Adrian John on most things but add the Haydn as a third on docs.
I can only remember a barmaid called Jean at the Mill....thats not you though..is it? I think she joined us post mum leaving dad. Things got a bit mad in those last years at the pub!! When mum was doing catering was the best time. It was my job to mash spuds in the baby burco boiler! I went back to the Mill once...it was unrecognisable.
The last I heard about Uncle Harry he had taken on the Old Church pub, which didnt last, and then he was somewhere on the South Coast of England. Perhaps with his daughter...Im ashamed to say I have forgotten his childrens names Embarassed

As you probably gather from my posts I now live in France near Mont Blanc. I have worked all over France renovating property foer expats but I suffered an angina attack a couple of years ago and now I take things a bit easier. I runa a ski chalet for an old army buddy who works in the middle east. Its a bit manic in the winter but the summer is a doddle!
My raison d'etre for joining this site was because I started to do our family tree about 10 years ago and this forum is great for finding people who can fill in the blanks. Pre 1911 I can find most stuff online but after there are few records available to access.
Id love to hear about your time at the Mill and the characters you can remember?

Are you talking about Avril Eason whose parents used to run the Mill back in the late 1960's

Yes Mal,
Avril was my sister. She didnt actually spend much time at the Mill as she was married to Jeff Davies by then. Jeff was in the Royal Marines. Sadly, Avril died from cancer more than 20 years ago. I am contacting anyone who knew Avril and might have pictures of her in her teens. Maybe photos from Abertillery Grammar Sch.
I have faith that there are photos out there. I was recently sent a picture of me at the infants in SixBells when I was about 6 or 7!!! Laughing

Ron Screen and the old Tylerian crowd. !!!!!Don`t remember a Jean behind the bar usually just me (and you) I used to fill in when your Mum was out ---cooking etc good years. but hard work

I actually looked after Avril the last few months of her life in Newport as your mum was working and I was running an OffLicence that didn`t open until the evenings
. Unfortunately I haven`t any photo`s of her and can`t remember who would ,maybe someone like Jill Small who used to visit often .I`ve checked I` haven`t any ,only postcards she sent me from holidays etc.Is Ruth still alive in Newport ? Since my mum died I don`t go home to Abertillery much so have lost touch with most peopleI used to hear from the local Jehovah`s in Swindon they used to go to Newport meetings alot

Hi Eileen,
Your absolutely right...early senility means I would probably remember your face but not just by name. There were quite a few barmaids at the Mill, particularly after Mum left, so I only remember a couple of them.
Im afraid I cant tell you if Mum is still alive. You know the situation with the JW lot. I never felt welcome in her Newport home.
