My mother was born in Abertillery in 1926. Her father worked in the mines. She left Abertilley in 1930 but we have been back for many visits. She has many fond memories of Abertillery and is always talking about things she did.

hi Alison
I think most people who move away from Abertillery still think of it as home. Ive been away  for well over 20 years and even though most of the family have either died or moved away I still say "going home" when we head that way, Obviously your Mum must have good memories even if she was only 4years old when she left ,family holidays maybe?
I used to complain about the state of the shops etc in Llanhilleth and Sixbells and how depressing it was  but  all my Mum would say was "its still home"
     So very true

Thank you for your replies. I had made a mistake mum was 14 when she left in 1940 not 1930. She went into domestic service. She does still think of it as home. It is a beautiful place. She often recalls family memories like going to the pit to meet her dad. The house she used to live in in Alma street that is no longer there. Going to school. The old cemetery near Alma street. My grandparents lived in Abertillery until the fifties when they moved to London.

hi Alison,
small world, my sister lived in Alma street about 6 doors up from the
Cemetery ( my other sister is buried there- died at 10  days old!!!!!)
Family members rented various houses in Alma St and  Walter St according
to the 1901/1910 censuses.
I was born in SixBells in 1939 and my parents lived inthe same house until
they died, my dad at 78 years my Mum at 91 years.
Abertillery `s certainly changed over the years Not always for the better
but the spirit of neighbourness still holds true even though maybe they don`t leave  their houses unlocked etc when they go out  but that`s the same everwhere today.

Alma St

I also lived on Alma St for many years before emigrating to Canada. Bill.

I have family living in Weymouth Daughter Allison nursing in Dorchester son in law Daren Fire Chief of Dorset
Nantyglo and Blaina both born and reared
When Daren was working in Fire station Abertillery they both  lived in Abertillery
Two grand sons born in Devon age now 19 and 13
After all her early visits back home my daughter would cry her eyes when haveing to leave her family and Blaina

No more she wouldent come back to live now for all the tea in China
Can we really blame her

From Nantyglo to Blaina
We cannot hide the pain
Deserted streets empty shops
Sulking in the rain
The valleys had its share
Of wet days over fine
Death came in a hurry
A dram of coal a mine
Work pub church or chapel
We never wanted more
Abide with me and Sospan Fach
Would open many a door
And when I sadly wander
Where happiness was slain
I close my eyes and dream awhile
Fond memories to remain
