From the above list, Ive noted the name of F Patey , publican , with the address given as 'Mount Pleasant' . Can anyone tell me please , is this the name of a road in Six Bells or Abertillery, or just an area? Anyone remember a Patey family? Any help appreciated. Thanks

Mount Pleasant ws an area around Alma Street where the Mount Pleasant Inn still stands although the area on the mountain around Rhiw Parc or maybe what is now Pantypwdyn was also at one time known as Mount Pleasant according to an early map and the 1881 census

Thank you Carolyn , sorry for the delay in replying. Would the area you describe have included where the old Coach and Horses was?
Who do I contact by the way if I would like to ask for permission to use one or two photos from the site , on our family history website?

No The old Coach and Horses pub is in Six Bells although I believe that had a different name at one early time possibly the Coronation. I have an interest in the Coach and Horses as my maternal grandfathers sister was landlady at some date

Re coach and Horses. -- My interest is that my 93 year old mother (who is writing her memories of Six Bells) INSISTS that her mother used to work for A .Patey who at the time owned or at least was living at and running the Coach and Horses . That name does not appear on the census though . I know A. Patey WAS a publican in the area, but I cant find out where else he could have been landlord, and now that the Coach and Horses is gone, I dont know whether there would be a list of all previous landlords ? I wonder if censuses can ever be wrong ? my mum is SO adament as her mother worked there for years (around 1910ish onwards til about 1920 I believe. She would be so pleased if I could find that her memory hasnt failed her.

That previous post should have read F. Patey, not A Patey.

Arthur Edwin Patey ran the Coach and Horses pub, Chapel Road, Six Bells in 1911 -1920 according to Kellys directory. The last census was 1901 and he may not have been living at that address or in the area at that time. Census information can be fairly unreliable in the spellings of names, places and especially in Christian names. Some people would often list the names they were generally known by not their given name

My pleasure, only just noticed that part of you message but the Coach and Horses pub, Chapel Road, Six Bells is still there. I don't know of any other.
