Mr SpeakerAs the speaker of the commons seems set to resign - who will succeed him?
What parliament really needs is someone above the petty party squabbles – ideally an independent.
Someone who hasn’t been tainted by the expenses scandal
Someone who has spoken out on expenses previously.
Someone whiter than white
I know just the man

Gorbals Mick was tainted from Day 1.
Remember the bookies complaining about the number of bets they had on him, an outsider at 25/1 ?
Bet you he gets his - no, our - £100,000 pay-off.

It looks like the speaker will be severely punished, with a big fat pension and a place in the LORDS.
Serves him right.
Anyone know how much expenses the lords are on?

They get an attendance allowance.
The latest figiures I can get quickly is for 2003-4, when it was £150/day with another £75 to cover meals and incidental travel.
I do have an idea that it's nearer £300/day ( all-in ? ) these days.
