New Council Leader

My money is on Hedley McCarthey for leader and Jim McIlwee (more doubtful) for deputy. Who's your bet?
martyn142

I'll go for Steve Thomas with Hedley McCarthy as deputy. Whichever way it goes, Steve Thomas is the man running things over there.
Morris Minor

With labour's knack for backing loosers I would go for Hedley McCarthey, their lastest reshuffle and deselections already suggests they are pushing the self destruction button in my opinion.

It may not bode them well in the council elections, such is their arrogance feeding their over inflated egos maywell come back and bite them in the proverbial yet again.

The Green Man

Did anyone catch the 1:30 news on BBC Wales? My partner said she is sure they named the suspended former deputy leader as Hedley McCarthy. He will be pleased!

Spot on Dai - Nigel Daniels was running the ship before he was suspended as you infer.

Labour group elect new leader

Quote:
BLAENAU Gwent Council's Labour group have elected Headley McCarthy as their new leader.

In a secret ballot this afternoon, the 23 Labour councillors voted for the next in line to take over from John Hopkins.

Mr Hopkins resigned as leader two weeks ago after being threatened with a no-confidence vote by senior colleagues.

Mr McCarthy, a Llanhilleth ward councillor and executive member for the environment, took the title against fellow councillors Steve Thomas and David White.

The decision by the group will now have to be ratified by full council on Thursday

Blaenau Gwent leader is selected

Quote:
Blaenau Gwent has a new council leader, who is promising a "fresh start" for the authority from the Labour Party.

Councillors in the Labour group have also appointed a new deputy leader, Steve Thomas, after his predecessor was suspended.

Re: Blaenau Gwent leader is selected

Did anyone catch Hedley's performance on the BBC Politics show on Sunday? You can see it on the web, go the bbc - politics show and follow the link for Wales (i would post the direct link, but i seem to muck it up).
Hardly a star performance! He denied any division in BG labour, this is the day after the Weatern Mail letters page carried a statment issued by Abertillery Ward Labour Party totally disassociating themselves from the whole leadership issue. I quote:

Support for Hopkins
SIR – I write with regard to the resignation of Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council’s leader, Cllr John Hopkins.

We, as members of the Abertillery ward Labour Party, would like to express our appreciation for the way Cllr Hopkins has served the people of Blaenau Gwent as leader during the past decade.

As a councillor for Brynmawr and the council’s representative on the Welsh Local Government Association, his honesty and integrity in the way he champions the people of Blaenau Gwent have earned him an unprecedented level of respect from local government, the National Assembly and Westminster.

Cllr Hopkins epitomises Labour values in Blaenau Gwent and we believe the tremendous progress the local authority has made in recent years has been due largely to his leadership quantities, which should have carried the council through to at least the next local elections.

It is therefore no surprise that we wish to express our anger and disappointment at the way Cllr Hopkins has been hounded out of office.

We condemn the actions of all “the group of like-minded Labour councillors” who took it upon themselves to serve Cllr Hopkins with this ultimatum, including an Abertillery ward councillor, Cllr Royston Welch, and in doing so, Abertillery ward Labour Party wishes to disassociate itself totally from Cllr Welch’s actions.

ROBERT PHILLIPS
Secretary, Abertillery Labour Party, Newall Street, Abertillery, Blaenau Gwent

So much for no divisions! (It also looks like Cllr Welch doesn't stand much chance of being selected this time). Does anyone know when Abertillery are selecting their candidates? I thought they had to get it done by the middle of December?
martyn142

Thanks for that Dai. I hadn't seen the letter. I doubt it is a coincidence that Abertillery is Nigel Daniels' branch. Sounds like a bit of a power struggle going on in that ward.
Carolyn

Not suprising, in the last council elections if you did not vote labour you had very few choices due to the lack of other candidates. Maybe that accounts for the very poor turn out so many chose not to vote at all. Rolling Eyes

'I Cladius' repeated? Each successor more corrupt than its predeccessor?
