THE Independents are coming – it’s official.
Councillors with no party alignment could to take positions of power in four South Wales councils next week – and exercise massive influence in a fifth.
Coalition negotiations across the region have left Independent councillors standing on the doorstep of power in Caerphilly, Merthyr, Blaenau Gwent and Torfaen and with significant influence in Bridgend.
Labour politicians have been muttering about the efficiency of Independent-led authorities but Jeff Edwards, the leader designate of Merthyr council, dismissed this as bitterness.
He said: “This has been coming for a long time. Perhaps now Labour will realise how unpopular they have become among the people of South Wales.”
