Only Memories LeftHow many of us can remember the days of trips to Barry Island, I know I can. We use to love spending the day on the beach and the highlight of visiting the fairground. Last week I took a sentimental visit to this once fantastic seaside resort to have the bubble burst. It has changed such a lot the fairground that use to be was great now only about 6 rides left. Then to be told that it was closing down at the end of the year.

I read somewhere that the fair owners had thought of shutting a couple of years ago but kept giving it a go.....this year they thought the bbq summer predicted would save them. Shame.
Sad to say I hadn't been to Barry for years until a couple of months ago. Even though the fair was run down the paved promenade was very nice and and looked well kept

I went a few years ago and surprised at the decline especially since Butlins closed and the point became a housing development. It needed quite a bit of investment it looked very shabby to what is was years ago

Barry islandI can remember the day trips to Barry Island very well that was the only time we had a chance to see the sea side,we used to think it was wonderful.
The only snag was that we travelled on utility buses and the seating on those was awful the seats was made up of wooden slats like park benches.
Can anyone else remember them they was in use just after the second world war.The last time i was in Barry island was just before they Demolished butlins holiday camp so thats been quite a few years ago.

My mum grew up in Barry so pretty much each year we would go to Barry on our holidays (we lived in Brum).
It's changed so much in the past few years - is it right they demolished Bindles and have built apartments there instead? Do the swans still mug you for bread as you walk across the park by the boating lake though?
Oh happy memories........

Only Memories LeftI remember going to Barry Island on a Sunday trip arranged by Oak Street Workmans Club. I recall that all he announcements being made for lost or missing children being preceeded by 'Attention Attention on the beach and promanade......' I also recall getting home and having to make the long walk upto opposite Len Adam's garages. It is odd how things go around in a circle, I found myself doing some research on steam engines some years ago and the engine in question was scrapped at Barry Island. The ironey is I probabily walked past the train in question when I was approx eight years old en route from the coach park to the sea front.
We also holidayed there in a B&B down near the docks. our evenings were filled with walking down at the docks and collecting the bananas that had fallen from the ships and lorries as they were unloaded.
I now live 200 yards from Bristol Zoo another venue of organised trips from those happy days.

i loved the coach trips to Barry island as a kid and having some spending money to take with you to spend on the rides. every club would sit together on the sands with squashed sandwiches got covered in sand when the wind was blowing and you were huddled inside a wind breaker and a flask of tea, stewed. wriggling out of your wet cozzie under a towel shivering with the cold when your mam rubbed you down with a sandy towel. Lost kids announcements all day with the kids bawling in the background the clock and all the fun of the fiar to follow afore boarding the bus for a sing song of for hes a jolly good driver and shell be coming round the mountain all the way home. happy days
