RIP Tony Benn

Very sad news of the death of Tony Benn. A great thinker, a great writer and a man of action. I doubt anyone, whether they agreed with him or not, would deny the influence he's had on British politics.

He was a hero of mine before I gave up on party politics.  I canvassed for him in Bristol in the 1983 election. I don't blame myself entirely for him not getting elected  Smile I was lucky enough to see him speak many times and he was always an inspiration.

He was also obviously a severe critic of New Labour. It's a shame they don't have anyone of his conviction these days. He believed you had to stick to your principles and offer the public a real choice at election time, not various shades of blue. He'll be missed by many, me included.

Not fussed much about his views and left leanings to be honest.

But absolutely full of admiration for him as a sincere and absolutely straight guy, who practiced what he preached.

RIP a giant of politics.

R.I.P. Tony Ben (and the Labour party now he's gone)
Where are the plaudits from the Labour supporters on this forum, shameful that they do not show this man the respect and recognition he deserves.

Nil Sine Labore

It is good to see my Aber on line critics paying their respect to one of Labours longest serving MP † †
A champion of democracy Wedgy Bennís commitment to the Labour party was unshakable, even though on times he didn't always have his own way, or agree with all that was going on, Labour and Benn like Bevan and Foot would only part company, when that †place from troubles all was to be their new home.
God be with you Mr Benn I hope one day we shall meet again

A good quote from Tony Benn about Kinnock, although it could apply to virtually any modern-day Labour MP really

"When he started in 1970 he wrote to me saying he believed everything I believed. Politicians are divided into signposts and weathercocks. Neil Kinnock gave up everything he believed in to get power and ended up with no one believing him about anything. That makes him a weathercock. Margaret Thatcher was a signpost. The trouble was, I thought her sign pointed in the wrong direction. She was not affected by spin-doctors, she said what she meant and people knew what they were voting for. I see myself as being more of a signpost, like her."
