Stray Sheep

Is anyone else really cheesed off by the amount of stray sheep wandering the streets lately?  I've phoned the council 3 times in the last fortnight to report sheep either wandering the streets, munching the plants in my garden or grazing happily in Six Bells park!  On all 3 occasions the council has assured me that the impounding team has been sent immediately.  Of course I can't prove it but I'm sure I've just seen the same 3 sheep making their way up Cwm Farm Road!  Not only are they a pain in the neck when you want to let your dog off the lead for a nice run but can't for fear of sheep being where you least expect them but they are also a danger to motorists.  I'd get a fine for letting my dog stray but it seems farmers just get away with letting their sheep wander all over the place causing a nuisance.

We have seen a more than usual amount of sheep wandering around.

They say what goes around, comes around,it takes me back to my youth when a sheep wandering down the street or eating out of the dustbin was a common sight.Obviously there were less cars around then and they were less likely to cause an accident except the one that stuck it's head through our kitchen window when my mother opened the curtains early one morning.Don't know who was the most frightened,or on another occasion I had one run head first into my leg when I disturbed it's bin feast in my mates garden.

One thought, why are the council responsible for rounding them up,where are the owners? What do the they do with them once they have them.Perhaps they should impound them like cars and charge the farmers exhorbitant fees to release them.    Wink

Sheep are not worth much to a farmer, and the council dont want the hassle of looking after them when they are impounded because they know the farmers wont bother to pay the fees to get them back.

Yes Jaybe is right.  They aren't worth anything nowadays.   Apparently though the Council does impound them.  Not sure what they do with them if they are not claimed though.  Do sheep still have to be marked?  Remember they used to mark them to identify them?  I wonder why farmers still bother letting them lamb though if they are not worth anything.  You'd think they'd get rid of the ram and just wait for the flock to die off.  Who knows?  I've just seen one with a lamb in someones garden on Cwm Farm Road  Laughing

I remember several years ago there was a dispute as to who, the council or farmers, should be maintaining the boundary fences adjoining common land. Each party blaimed the other and nothing has been resolved since, hence the number of loose sheep chomping their way through our shrubbery.
Seriously though they are a danger on the roads and should be removed immediately to aviod unnecessary accidents. Perhaps the council should just round them all up and send them off to the nearest slaughter house, that would solve the problem.

I didn't know about the dispute.   They are a menace on the roads.  I wonder how long the council keeps them in the pound for before destroying them?

I'm ranting again!   On Monday there were 5 stray sheep in my street.  I rang the council and reported them and asked what they actually do when they receive a report of this nature.  The lady told me that they ring the farmer initially followed by the council's impounding team if it's available.  Forgive me if I'm being a bit dim but how exactly do they know which farmer the sheep belong to especially when they are not marked?

The same sheep were in a neighbour's garden yesterday happily munching his lawn!   This morning I spotted them wandering up Cwm Farm Road and at lunchtime they were behind the quarry off Cwm Farm Road.  So obviously the council didn't actually bother to do anything about my complaint!

First and foremost stray sheep are a danger to road users.  I'm afraid there is going to be an accident as they just seem to leap out into the road.  Secondly, they are an inconvenience to dog walkers as you daren't let your dog off the lead for a run in case there's a flock around the next corner.  And lastly they ruin plants - garden and wild.

I've just emailed the council yet again.  I can't wait for the election candidates to knock my door!   Laughing

He will be on first name terms with them shortly Laughing

You are right about the sheep being a danger to motorists they were wandering on the new road last week when we went to Neville Hall hospital, we slowed down when we saw them as they were making their way to the verge, we carried on and then one changed his mind turned, ran back up the road and dashed in front of us.  My daughter braked hard but I am glad that I was wearing a seatbelt I would have made the rest of the journey by ambulance
