Taken for an expensive ride

General information here. The bolitics is on the other side.

I've been informed tonight that the Council have increased Taxi Driver Licence fees from £40-odd to over £120.

Don't blame the taxi guys and girls when our fares have to increase.

PS the new rate is more than a driver on 16 hours per week earns in er.... a week.

Shocking.

PPS the increase is more than 40 - yes FORTY - times the increase in Council Tax.
Oh - and over EIGHTY TIMES THE RATE OF INFLATION.

Scandalous.

There speaks a true Tory: Aneurin Bevan and Michael Foot will be turning in their graves at such pathetic capitalist language.

Fine.

I'll add you to the list of people I suggest that taxi owners etc. refuse to convey.

The latest on this is that the Council has written to all license holders (firms and drivers) asking for their views (and also pointing out such things as we would still be one of the least expensive councils, and that the council has to recover its costs because of financial pressures).

Holders have until 24th April to respond.
On 6th May the Licensing Committee will consider the matter and "subject to approval the new fees will take effect from 12th May 2014" .

NOTE - License holders can (rightfully in my view) have their say, but will the public be afforded the same courtesy if taxi firms then ask the council to increase fares to cover the huge increase (tripling the fees)?

The council have to agree and allow increased fares but what do you think would happen if you approached a councillor and complained about it?
Who do you think would get the blame?

Anyway, one of the councillors involved took the opportunity to have a word with me about what I've written. They seemed particularly concerned that I had named the entire Licencing Committee.
I explained, saying that they saw what I'd written, so what was the problem?
Guess what - they hadn't read it, they simply were 'told by another councillor'.
Can you believe this?

I suggest that people email their councillor(s) (@blaenau-gwent.gov.uk) and tell them exactly what they think of this.

And I suggest that councillors would be well advised to read things for themselves, not take another politician's word for it.   Wink
