I am researching the Beard family and have found a branch that appears to have moved to Abertillery after 1875- the first ine was Isaac Beard, married to a Catherine James, living in Cwm St at time of the 1881 census - a tin worker....one of their sons Edwin Burley Beard was killed in WW1.
Any info readers may have about the family name, are there still ' beards ' in Abertillery? Also there is an association wiith the Colliers Arms Inn and the George Inn- do these pubs still exist?
I am doing this from New Zealand- Christchurch - home of the Canterbury Crusaders Super 14 team , passionate about rugby as I am sure a lot of the townspeople of Abertillery are...
Hope someone sees this note and could possibly reply
best wishes

Re: The Beard families in Abertillery
Hi Tony,
Three years ago we were in Christchurch NZ on a wet and windy Saturday night for the 1st test of the Lions Tour (Brian O'Driscoll would rather forget it!!).
As Paul (my cousin) has mentioned our fathers are from Abertillery and the line you are searching is our Great Grandfather he also had a son Issac (our grandfather) and his sons were William Norman (my Dad) and Edwin (Paul's Dad)
I would be interseted to hear how your line got to New Zealand
Best regards

Beard Family in Abertillery
Was really surprised to see your post in Abertillery on line as I had no idea any Beard strand of family was in New Zealand. I believe you already had a posting from my brother and my cousin. My father William was the 3rd child but eldest son in a large family born and bred in Abertillery but with roots in the SW of England. His father was a coalminer and he followed him down the pits but later left Wales during the depression to work in service in London. Would love to hear about you and your side of the family. Did you get ribbed at school too about your surname?

The Abertillery Beards
Thanks Paul, Pete and Margaret for your replies, fantastic to hear from you all..... where to begin is a bit hard, Isaac Beard who was married to Catherine James parents were Isaac Beard (born Feb 1822 in Potterne, Wilts)and Harriet Hart (b 1823 in easterton), Issacs father was Roger Beard (b 1780 Potterne) and Joanna White (b 1794 Potterne), Rogers parents were John Beard (b 1754 Potterne) and Elizabeth Yaetts (b 1757), John Beards father Thomas had a number of children and it is one of those that my line comes from , so in the case of Paul Beard you are my 8th Cousin!........ I have taken the Beard family back to abt 1600- the early generations all lived in and around Potterne, Worton, Great Cheverell.......You can see the family tree on a website www.genealogy.com..or better still on the internet go into Google and search for the following .....The Beard family Wiltshire to NZ ...the first result will take you to my family tree home page....I am also happy to send you a copy of the family tree on a disc - this has photo's and other information in it that is not on the webpage.......... Diane Hale has been fantastic in providing me with a lot of information (she had the details of the Welsh side) - he expanded tree now has close to 7,000 names in it!
How I cam to be in NZ - well my parents , Martin David Beard and Pamela Elizabeth Dittmer emigrated ot NZ in 1966 with me and my sister Andrea...my fathers parents - Reginald John Beard and Irene Hampson also emigrated with us..... I have just retruned to NZ (Oct 2007) after living and working in London for 12 years ..shame I did not know abt you guys when we were in the UK!.....
Hopefully all of this makes sense........
Paul- I would love to have copies of any famuily info you have ...my grandfather - Reginald John - also served in WW1 - in the Royal Engineers in a gas division - thankfully he survived, unlike Edwin Burley Beard....any info or photo's yoi may have I would love to see copies of - if that is not too much of an imposition....
Maragaret- yes I did get teased a lot at school being a 'Beard'...but how neat to have an unusual family name when you are doing genealogy!..would hate to be a Jones living in Wales and tryung to search the family name !....
Pete- yes Christchurch is a bit savage at times in winter- was at Lancaster Park on Sat to see the Crusaders beat the Waratahs in the supoer 14 final and will be there again on June 21 to see the All Blacks beat England (by a good margin I hope)....
I guess this all for now...... thanks again so much for taking the time to get in contact ...... my personal NZ email is beardo888@yahoo.co.nz, if you would like to use that to send any info you have to it would be greatly appreciated.
If you do want a copy of the family tree disc, and you are happy to, let me know a mailing address and I will send it to you.
Best wishes
Tony
