To view or not to view

Can some one please explain why we are unable in this area to access the full range of freeview channels.  People in neighbouring areas are able to access a tremendous amount of freeview channels but not us.

Re: To view or not to view

I went to a public meeting in Abertillery a couple of years ago at which this was one of the issues raised.

The wonderful array of freeview TV channels is only available to those living in range of a main transmitter. Our nearest one is at Wenvoe, just outside Cardiff. If you receive your signal from a relay transmitter (as most people in the South Wales valleys do) there is a limit of around 15 channels (I forget the exact number). There are valid technical reasons for this, but I can`t remember what they are  Confused

Apparently the geography of the South Wales Valleys makes it the most difficult area in the UK to transmit to.

Thanks saeson, I firmly believe though that a thing is only as difficult as people wish to make it. It should be no more difficult to broadcast around the valleys as it is in other similar areas of Britain.
I have been reliably informed that the relevant authorities are not willing to pay for the transmitter to be upgraded.

It seems that yet again this area has once again been relegated to a second class service.

Maybe its something for our local representatives to take up.

Who knows?  Confused

Judging by the subject line it`s probably a pop at S4C (again) this time for not having English commentary. That`s because it`s S4C Rolling Eyes  But then I`d guess that if you need commentary to understand what`s going on you`d be better off watching something else  Rolling Eyes

Hi Kelvin - Eddie's apparent aim in life is to confuse and irritate. To be fair he's very good at it.  Laughing

Hi martyn. From looking at his previous posts i believe your right.  But Im good at confusion and direction to lol.

Of course he could have a hidden agenda and may just be trying to divert peoples attention from the fact that our so called representatives have not addressed the problem of the people of this borough not having the same viewing choices as other people.

He may well be.  Laughing

I've been intending to get rid of Sky, which gets evermore expensive, and replace it with Freeview (using an aerial) or Freesat (using the Sky dish). I think you have just made up my mind for me!

I cancelled my sky subscription last year and i get all the freeview channels through the sky box, you dont have to change anything.

You will have to tell me how you have done this as freeview is only available via terrestial transmitters, not sattelite.  You are probably picking up the freesat channels which are not as numerous as freeview.
martyn142

Even with Freesat, I understand the Sky+ function i.e. recording programmes, doesn't work without a Sky subscription. I use this a lot as I never seem to have time to sit down and watch things when they are actually scheduled or they are on too late. So we were planning on getting a Freesat box with recorder.

On the other hand my son also has Sky+ in his room but he will have to make do with the old Sky box and he just won't be able to record.

If you have sky take out the sky card and you'll see what channels you get free.

I know which channels you get without a sky subscription I have had a freesat box for a number of years as well as a sky subscription, however I am not referring to Freesat as you are, but to freeview which is a different medium all together as it is transmitted via terrestrial transmitters and not via sattelite.   If you look at any decent channels listing mag you will see how many channels you cannot get.

If you know anyone in Cwnbran for instance ask them how many channels they can recieve vis an aerial , and this is the point of my posting.

When freeview was first mooted we were all told how it would enhance our viewing choices, but in our area this has not been the case.

As I stated, once again we are palmed off with a second class service and none of our elected representatives seems willing to do anything about it.
jaybe

Well ok, keep your hair on...
kdwent

Hair fully fixed.
But in all seriousness it is because people do not cause a fuss that we get such bad service.

Don't know if anyone will find this useful but here is a Freeview coverage checker

Thank you for the link Martyn, I have compared what we get to viewers in the Bath area and here are the links for anyone who wishes to see what we are missing out on.

From Wikipedia:

"The full package of sixty Freeview channels (six-multiplex) will only be available via the main transmitter in each transmitter group, and a number of other Relay Transmitters that are deemed to be important in terms of the large coverage area they serve. Those who rely on a local self-help relay transmitter, or other Relay transmitters covering a small village or area will only receive around eighteen channels (three-multiplex) after digital switchover"

From a quick Google search it looks like this was a commercial decision taken by the Freeview consortium back in 2006  Crying or Very sad
kdwent

Thanks Ian and Saeson. Your reples perfectly illustrate my points.

Those being that we receive a second class service based on nothing more than commercial reasons, which is not good enough.
Mike

I fully agree with kdwent . .  We are being classed as second class when it comes to the Freeview system which the government forced on us by closing down the  Analogue system and introducing the `much better` Digital system`.
What they didn't tell us is that we would receive less channels than other parts of the country but still have to pay the same licence fee!
What a con job! Mad

just get and old out of use sky box with or with out a card and whack an old sky dish up and thats it free t.v. theres enough free channels up there to suit most people

dont pay !!!
martyn142

That works fine if you don't want to record programmes. If you do then you need a Sky subscription though.

Agreed,  but the point is we are not given the full range of Freeview channels, for purely financial reasons.

there are parts of Six Bells where you cannot receive a satellite signal so your suggestion will not work for them.

Why arent our concillors (not a spelling mistake) or MP fighting this on our behalf.
