Tributes paid to councillor with 'heart of gold'

Quote:
TRIBUTES are being paid to a Blaenau Gwent councillor who died after a short illness.

Cheryl Morris, 60, the member for Cwmtillery, had a "heart of gold" and would be missed by the whole community, her husband said.

Mrs Morris died on Monday night in Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny, after losing her fight to a liver complaint which was diagnosed nine months ago.

A businesswoman and community volunteer, she raised tens of thousands of pounds for good causes over the years.

Malcolm Morris, 59, said his late wife was "one of the best".

Speaking from his home in Cwmtillery, he told the Argus: "I'm totally lost. I feel like I've lost my right arm.

We have also reported this sad news on the front page of this site.

As it says in the tribute, Cheryl was involved deeply and passionately in the community, both as an independent councillor for the Cwmtillery Ward where she topped the poll at the last election, and as a columnist where she gathered and reported on local affairs and news for the Gwent Gazette, a column that also featured on the Cwmtillery website.

Cheryl knew almost everyone and everything in the town and everyone knew Cheryl!

I shall certainly miss chatting to her about life in Abertillery and Cwmtillery and on behalf of the Abertillery Online community, I should like to pass on our heartfelt condolences to her family and many friends.

Tributes paid to councillor with a heart of gold

I too am saddened by the death of Mrs Cheryl Morris. She was a lovely lady who will be sadly missed by everyone who knew her.

Can't think of the year the World Trade Centre collapsed in New York but in that year Cheryl used to come to computers class down the Six Bells Community Centre and her next door neighbour Renee Williams was the tutor of the class. Cheryl was taking her old CLAIT and, like me, she passed and went on to write for the Gwent Gazette what was going on in Abertillery. That was the time I first met her and sometimes would pop into the shop to see how she was getting on in life. I was shocked on Tuesday morning on learning this sad news that she had died. She used to recycle old mobile phones and empty ink cartridges.

My sincere sympathies go out to her husband Malcolm and the rest of the family. Funeral is the 31st January.

R.I.P Cheryl. We will miss you

Diane
