Welcome to Abertillery............. Any Ideas ?I was asked yesterday what I'd put on a sign saying 'Welcome to Abertillery'.
eg. 'Welcome to Newport, gateway to Wales'.
Anyone any ideas for one for Aber ?
The best might, just might, go in to print.

Right, I'm glad we got the humourous one out of the way quickly.
Now, anyone thought of anything ( apart from 'home of the Harold whatsisname Murders ) ?

Abertillery, twinned with Royston Vasey..
A town MADE for local people...

That was not meant to be humorous rocke, thought i'd better clear that up.
How about welcome to Abertillery a dying town six miles from EBBW VALE, an up and coming town with a rail network and shops that are actually open.

welcome to abertillery......no train station here
welcome to abertillery....no jobs here
sorry had to get them out if the way!!
I have tried to think of nice phrases but they sound trite and laughable with the state of the place.
maybe for the future....
welcome to abertilley...home of the blues festival
Down in hampshire saw a 'welcome to highcliffe..... home of sainsbury's youth choir of the year 2008' Do we have any winners or famous sons/daughters/groups ?

Problem is Rockey I'm not sure there is anything distinctive you could latch onto. I suspect it would have to be fairly general like 'Heart of the Valleys' or similar.
I'll have a think, so don't get alarmed if you hear any moaning or grinding noises

The signs don't look good Rocke.
The council could save more money if they left the sign out all together.
Then as people passed through this blot on the landscape the next signs they would see is.
WELCOME TO BLAINA OR BRYNMAWR.

I should have known better, shouldn't I ?
There's a town in Norway called - wait for it - Hell.
Perhaps the Community Council would like to twin with that as well.

Good idea rocke!
Then we can say we've been to hell and back.

It seems you are stating others opinions but none of your own?

The coments were never meant to be serious, If you live in this town you either laugh or sit down and cry. In my experience those who have something to rave about also have something to gain from it. Judging from your number of postings you have very little interest either way like so many of the forum members. You took the time to log in and comment so where is your offering?
Abertillery Wales's Wonderland or Abertillery the Heart of Wales,
Trouble is those that live here have lost heart over the last 10 or 20 years. there have been a number of positive topics or postings on the forum but very few people reply. Do they live here I wonder or may be they don't participate in the events Abertillery has to offfer so they cannot comment.
In future if members don't have anything positive to say on any aspect related to Abertillery I suggest they don't comment at all. It would not take long for this forum to become defunct.

What about:
Nice and simple, yet I think it sums up what Abertyleri is. I think we need new ones; those old blue monolingual ones look nasty and worn out.

I think that looks really good Glenn.

I like this sign to, simple, straight forward, relevant, and eye catching.

It's gaining momentum Glenn.
CF's big idea for Cwmtillery is the Calon Project, so it fits nicely.
I'll forward this one if you're happy for me to do so.
Doesn't stop any other good ideas coming forward though ( hint, hint ).
Thanks so far everyone.

Thanks everyone
Yea, that'd be OK. It'd be nice for the Welsh to be first, as it would not also raise the profile of the language, but it fits in nicely with the Eisteddfod coming to Ebbw Vale and also in with all the new "Croeso i Flaenau Gwent, Cartref yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru 2010 - Welcome to Blaenau Gwent, Home of the National Eisteddfod Wales 2010," though I am aware that, in accordance the BG's Welsh language policy, English is above Welsh in BG.
