Your chance to catch first glimpse of Learning Zone

Quote:
THE designs and pictures for the exciting multi-million pound Learning Zone will be unveiled for the first time at public exhibitions this week.

Blaenau Gwent Council wants to hear the views of local people on the design of the Learning Zone, which will offer post 16 education opportunities for more than 6,000 students and adult learners per year.

The plans go on show at Tredegar Library on Wednesday, August 19, between 9.30am and 5.30pm.

They will be on show at Abertillery Market on Thursday, August 20, Ebbw Vale Market on Friday, August 21, and Brynmawr Market the following day.

The Welsh Assembly Government awarded £46m in funding for the Learning Zone last month.

Bids for match-funding from Europe are being submitted.

Public exhibitions of the plans - with illustrations of the interior and exterior of the proposed building - will also be on show at Ebbw Vale Library, Nantyglo Sports Centre and the Integrated Children's Centre in Blaina. The exhibition is also at the Project Office on Steelworks Road, Ebbw Vale - the main base for the regeneration projects going on at The Works.

A model of the massive 200-acre site and a model of The Learning Campus are also on view at the Project Office - and visits to The Works site can be arranged by appointment.

Coun Des Hillman, leader of Blaenau Gwent Council, said: “The Welsh Assembly Government has confirmed it is backing the Learning Zone project - it will be the first new education centre of its kind in Wales. We have great ambitions for the regeneration of the former steelworks site, and to create an exciting and modern 21st century Learning Campus there. For example, the new project can bring together education opportunities for 6,000 students per year - replacing worn-out buildings with the best modern facilities. Our public exhibitions are going out to local communities now to give as many people as possible an early chance to see the new designs and images from the architects. They give a good idea of the scale of the scheme. We believe that this will be the first new centre in Wales to provide learning, training and skills at college and university levels.”

The designs – illustrated on a series of colourful display panels – include high quality images of what both the interior and the exterior of the Learning Zone will look like. Contemporary material technology is proposed, with an impressive atrium with excellent natural light.
