I would like to go and would be more than grateful for a lift please. As a non driver transport is always a problem for me.

I can't find any reference to it on their website (http://www.pennantwind.co.uk/index.html), but it might be worth asking where the generated power is actually going to go, and who's going to get it ...

At the public display at the Ebenezer Church Feb 2004 Pennant Wind Energy were very evasive in regard to questions in relation to the actual benefits to the community or as to where the generated energy would go. Following that meeting a good number of people especially the elderly were under the impression that Abertillery and Cwmtillery would benefit from cleaner, cheaper electricity and reduced council tax, where this came from I have no idea.

I know that SCAM although in opposition to the wind farm proposals would welcome people who do not share these views to come along to the meetings. Pennant wind I believe have also been invited to attend in the past to put their case forward but they appear to be a little disenchanted with the invitation?

1. I don't know what SCAM is.

2. A mate of mine came up with some good ideas:

a. get BGBC to BUY some windmills, and they'll be able to direct the energy where they see fit (and presuming they're honest, that's good for the area). Then you'll get power created by you, for you.

b. Any jobs created by the local council relating to the project would be controlled by the council, and not by some corporation.

Anyone fancy shares?

I was pleased to find that the meeting of SCAM (Save Coity and Mynydd James Mountain) on the 6th September was very well attended with representatives from the Brynmawr, Nantygo, Blaina, Cwmtillery and Abertillery areas. Support and representation was also given by Sue Ball indepentent Cllr Brynmawr and BRfm Community Radio Station, Delwyn Davies on behalf of Peoples Voice and others.

http://www.cwmtillery.com/news/windfarm.htm

The main concern is that if planning of these four turbines go ahead (they can have very little effect on their own) it will just be a gateway for more to follow, and the valley may well end up surrounded by wind turbines at some later date. Naturally the roads and new roadway needed to transport the materials required to build even these four turbines will have disruptive and detrimental effects on wildlife all along its proposed route.

I was able to attend the meeting in Blaina with Carolyn. I must admit I was surprised but pleased at the attendance. I also admit to being rather in awe at the level of knowledge of some of the people present, not just on wind turbines themselves but also on the environmental impact of these monsters and about local flora and fauna, which will be under threat.

Carolyn has already mentioned some of the issues covered. I think what hit me was the impact the construction of the turbines will have as much as the operation of the windfarm itself. Four 300ft turbines, the enormous sails/arms and each one requiring a massive concrete base. And all this material will be brought along Alma Street and Gwern Berthi Road and then via the concrete road above the lakes to the mountain top. If I lived in that area I'd be even more concerned than I am already at this proposal.

I shall certainly be objecting to the plans and if you oppose them then you should do likewise - the more objections which are lodged the more likely it is to be rejected by the Council. Contact details are:

For those who weren't able to attend there will be another opportunity when SCAM holds a further meeting in Abertillery on Wednesday 4th October, probably at Abertillery Comprehensive. We'll let you know as soon a s venue/time is confirmed.

The local councillors blow enough hot air to generate enough power to supply the whole of Blaeanu Gwent with out buying windmills -I t would be far better if as much energy was put into real alternatives to land based wind warms - They appear to fail to meet their targets and even when they do appear to half way realize their potential, they have little impact on greenhouse gas levels.

There a a number of alternatives. A point brought up at a SCAM meeting by the now Baroness Maggie Jones prior to the 2005 election in opposition to the proposed wind farm in Blaenau Gwent

I really would not oppose wind farms out at sea either. My only objection to this particular wind farm is that I do not think it should not be imposed on the residents of Blaenau Gwent.

Reduction in CO2 emissions can also be a saving grace.

Try walking instead of making unecessary journeys by car.
Sharing of transport when going to work.
Turn down heating and wear thermal clothing or an extra sweater
there are many other ways.
