Hi Caroline, another good photo of one of Henleys buses, this time at the bus stop between Attlee avenue and George Dagger avenue on the Roseheyworth estate. I must have got off the bus here hundreds of times in the 1950s, I recall the drivers names as Arthur Henley the owner, Don a dark headed chap, and Ray a tall chap with light coloured wavy hair. They also had conductresses but I cant bring any of their names to mind.

Just had another look at the photo trying to remember who lived in the houses. The semi at the top were Padgetts to the left and Rices to the right, the one on the bus stop was either Reg Morgan or Bernard Jones who played prop for Abertillery, not quite sure of that one.

The house on the corner is where an old friend of mine lived, mid to late 50's. Kerry Jones, sadly he just recently passed away. His fathers name was Chris Jones used to work at Cwmtillery pit. His sister Shirley still lives in Aber. Great photo Carolyn!

Does anyone remember Percy May, the Barber in town? Such a lovely man. I always liked going there as long as I lived in Abertillery, and even went to him sometimes when we'd moved to Ebbw Vale.
He always used a perfumed 'mist' when he'd finished the hair cut. Can't recall that in any other barbers!
I know he died and that his wife wrote a moving piece about him in the Gwent Gazette.
How many years ago is that now?
Anthony

I was always taken to Percy May and he was great with children. I remember he used to have a booster seat with I was allowed to put onto the chair so that he could reach me. And, yes, I remember having the mist sprayed all over me  Very Happy

On a similar vein, it is probably common knowledge, but I didn't know until I was in my 20s, that Jack Nadal had fought in the Spanish Civil War. I was getting my hair cut there and it somehow came up in conversation. He fought for the Royalists against Franco's fascists.

Didn't Old Jimmy Doolan cut hair for a while? I think I can remember going to him as kid up Blaenau Gwent, he also put a plank of wood on the chair for us nippers . But he cut hair the modern way, put a bowl around your head and cut around the edge. Came out looking like a Mushroom.    Bill.

I also had my hair cut by Harry Thomas in Cwmtillery Pit ambulance room once.

I seemed to spend most of my childhood over there - I was never taken to hospital if I got hurt (which I did often as I was very accident prone). It was always the ambulance room.  Very Happy

Have the names of all the nurses, sister, Doctors and Male nurse of the Abertillery District hospital photos shown. Pictures taken, I think 1940/50? My auntie is the Matron Grace Elizabeth Body. Does anyone know where the photo was taken. Looked on maps.google.com and there is a building to the left pathway with 2 garages which could be the one in the picture. Also someone might know the date. Thanks ivor

I'm afraid the hospital is closed now.

Hi martyn. Thanks. I have put 2 photos on the People's Collection of Wales and sent the large originals to Susan Evans, RCAHMW, Plas Crug, Aberystwyth SY23 4UH. for safe keeping and public display. It has every nurses name together with sisters, male nurse 2 doctors and my Auntie the Matron circa 1930/40. I wanted to date the photo and find out where it was taken. On maps.google.com I see there is a building to the left hand side path with 2 garages and  a building. It looks like it could have been taken from the other side of this, but unfortunately cannot see the window layout from that side.I did not realise it was now shut. Shame as I thought they might find time to confirm this?
