That's just bad spelling though Rocke, the point I was making is that the changing of one letter ie g to c totally alters the translation of the name and is therefore incorrect. The misspelling of Cwmtyleri doesn't do this.

As my message seems to have disappeared (never happened when I was admin Martyn! - just to reiterate the aberfest website is www.aberfest.info
The full programme is on there, so enjoy.
Ps Was intrigued Carolyn by the names from that Gazette article form the 30s and their derivation although some/most are completely wrong. Tyleri is nothing to do with tyllerydd and arael i,e ar-ael means in Welsh on a brow of a hill which the farm is of course. Gelli crug means heather grove! (could come up in a quiz!). Gwern Berthi is/are Alder hedges or bushes not bushy moist meadow.
Still the guy was from Ebbw Vale so what would he know? |

Your message re Aberfest timetable has been moved and made sticky so that it will stay at the top and can be found more easily and not buried under loads of other messages
Gelli Crug did come up in a quiz Dai twice actually with the street names quiz online some years ago. Ian was not happy with the translation heather grove I don't know why since we were all on the same side and won for the benefit of those new members that do not know what we are talking about _________________ My life is no rehearsal There'll be no curtain call encore, so I've thrown my screwed up script away to ad lib my life once more! |

The Abertillery beer festival or any beer festival run by (CAMRA) which are put on the length and breadth of the country are not there to promote strong ale but are there to promote the different type,s of beer,s That are brew in britain
The beer,s that were at the festival you would not find in abertillery and the strongest one was a beer at 1043 og so not that strong
As this festival was run by abertillery lions to rasie money for local charity i see no harm in promoteing this festival and if alcohol is drunk with in reason we can all enjoy it
This must be the first time in fifty years that their has been 16 real ale,s on sale in abertillery so just enjoy |

Well said Leigh,I've seen several postings on this forum in the past including some if I'm not wrong from Mr Monk complaining about the lack of decent beer in Abertillery. As for the 'violent alcohol fuelled town' from my point of view as with a lot of these things that reputation is brought about by the minority,it's the majority we should be catering for. _________________ Politics,n.Strife of interests masquerading as a contest of principles. |

Leigh - we went to the beer festival and had a great time. Thanks very much for organising it if you were involved. I didn't see any drunks and the beers on sale weren't especially strong. But they were delicious, particularly the Otleys
In fact, I am confident that if you researched into what sort of drinks people who get involved in drunken violence and anti-social behaviour have been imbibing, real ale would hardly register.
What I am trying to say is ignore Adrian as he is spouting his usual twaddle. _________________ The compliments pass when the quality meet.

Hi Martyn Im glad you enjoyed yourself at the fest and you like the otley beers I can not take credit for the festival I only put the info on the site great credit should go to the people of the abertillery lions for runing the fest in a in real ale desert
I do know a bit about runing beer festival (having run the great leeds beer festival twice)
So if the lions do a one next year they could get touch and i could past on as much as i know but if the lions get in contact with the gwent branch of camra i;m sure they will help them and give them all the info they need
All you have to do now martyn is ask at your local landlord to put it on at your pub
Ask gavin at the commercial to stock it it,s the only place where you get a good pint in abertillery
If you are going to the blues festival you with get a decent pint there as rhymney brewery are runing the beer tent |

Sounds to me that MR MONK has a multiple personality disorder.
That must be down to the home-brew vimto. _________________ "Assert your right to make a few mistakes. If people can't accept your imperfections, that's their fault".

Which one are you Adrian we already know about your penchant for silky draws

I will mention it to Garvin, Leigh. I hope he is still having guest ales - the last time I was in there they didn't have any 'Whoosh' on
Something that occurred to me was that it might help at beer festivals if the breweries/micro-breweries had contact cards to hand out to any customers who wanted to get the beers at their locals. All I can tell Garvin is that it's called Otleys.
