Lucky you all know what you are on about I don't it's all council talk and politcs which does not make sense to me. I rather simple language and simple answers to a simple questions to understand what is going on in my area.
What is a banana republic, does that mean that we all came over on a banana boat or that we are all a bunch of bananas and what is a freudian slip is it a landslide or a ladies petticoat ?: I hope I have not offended anyone trying to be polite' I am just a happy little fairy who is at a loss to know what you are all talking about most of the time with all the big words. I get fed up and move on to read something else
Point taken.
Trouble is, it's difficult ( impossible with a wide variety of people such as a forum ) to pitch things at the right level.
Using too simple a language in some cases might be taken as talking down to people.
I do agree that everyday language is the best way of getting things over though.
The Council Chamber's the perfect place to see people overstretching themselves. We're all common folk but for some reason everyone seems to think being a councillor means you should never use words of less than 3 syllables.
Anyway, 'banana republic' might not be politically correct these days ( what is ? ). It refers to developing nations ( called 'Third World countries' in those days ) whose peoples were in the throes of tyranny, either ruled by dictators or the Communist Party ( or followers of the doctrine ).
I can't be sure but Cuba would seem to be a good instance of how the expression started.
Freudian slips come from Sigmund, who discovered that people's subconscious sometimes comes to the front and they give away something they've previously managed to cover up.
It's a bit like getting found out having told a fib.
Since we're not in the political section I'll give a simple example.
Someone throws a sicky, 3 weeks later they're discussing Utd v AC Milan in the Champions League and they say 'yea, we were right behind the goal and thought it was in'. Oops - they were supposed to be sick !
