Hi Sarnia
I remember a Chris and Clive Davies lived at the very top of upper Arrael Street in fact it was the last house on the end Elaine and Maureen the name Elaine does ring a bell bit of a kiss and tell if I have the right one but I was only 11 in 1960
Hope you find her I will be interested in listening to her past I lived at the bottom of Arrael Street No 39
I also knew a young girl who I sometimes played with she emigrated at about that time but only vague memories could this be you
May be I’m getting old

I dont remember the Davies girls but I lived with my nan in 6 Glan Ebbw Terrace for a while in the 60's Did you go to the British or were you older than me. I was born in '54 You may rememebr my aunty Pamela Ford from that time. She still live in Glan Ebbw Terrace last house before the old railway bridge.
My family have bee associated with that area for 4 generations. My great grandfather lived in The Pond House and Forge Row when he was a young man!
You wouldnt recognise any of that area these days. The gasometer is gone, tin works is a factory, the vivian pit is a sports centre and the road yoiu used to get to Aber is now the main road to Abergavenny and it by passes Six Bells and Abertillery.

There are lots of people here who went to Bryngwyn, I did too! You are about a year difference from my sister Avril but she went to the County
I was brought up in Richmond Rd, Six Bells but lived with my nan in Glan Ebbw Terrace for a couple of years...hence the British Sch reference.
If you look in other areas of the forum there are lots of posts from people who lived down the Arral.
My Uncle John Ford, Pamelas brother, was a draughtsman at Six Bells pit. You probably never met him but might remember his name. He was captain of a snooker team in Abertillery that won a national championship.
I take it you still live in Canada? I plan to retire to  Northern BC in 10 years time...if I survive that long!

Sorry about the mixup Robbie. I got the first post from Sarnia and your reply joined together for some reason.
I dont remember the band but then I was probably too young to go to pubs then. I didnt start to get interested in music till my dad bought the Rolling Mill in Church Street. The bloke who changed the records on our juke box used to give me the old ones he took off. I must have had about 500 when I left the Mill!
I did see Tom Jones when he did the Top Hat. Nobody knew how famous he would become!

The Rolling Mill Church Street many a drink I had in there while waiting for my girl friend she used to come down on the Cwmtillery Bus lived about half way up Alma Street  her name was Ann Wedge she had some younger sisters about your age
We would meet every Saturday afternoon in the arcade there was a little cafe in the middle I think see was the carnival queen for Cwmtillery at one stage there was also a little cafe on the right side of the foundry bridge has you look up from the mill we would meet in
Thanks for that just sparked a few more memories

I remember Ann Wedge but didnt know her sisters. I think she was mates with Jean Maclean the doctors daughter? There was a Jean Jones too at the time she was sparking a boy called Elwyn or Alwyn. His dad was a bookie who often operated his business in the bar at the Mill.
Because I was a Six Bells lad I didnt have that many mates from Aber or Cwmtillery. I used to knock about with a lad called Derek Rose from King Street, a couple of houses up from the Mitre Inn. I am told he has passed away.
I left Abertillery in 1970 to join the services and Ive only been back a couple of times. I dont think I would like it nowadays. Id rather remember it when the rivers were orange and a pint was 1s 8d !

Wow 1s 8d used to be 11d when I started drinking we would go into the Six bell pub watch the High Chaparral in colour because that was the only colour TV in the village then go to work in the pit on the night shift
I was courting Ann for about three years before we split up but I don’t remember her mentioning any other girl friends
And thinking on it you are probably right about her having younger sisters I must have her mixed up with some other Girl from Cwmtillery I know there used to be a youth club up around by the top hat somewhere
Some other chaps you may know Colin Comstock and Jeff Taylor haven’t seen Jeff for years But Colin last he was living next door to a little pub on the mountain next to St Illey Church (Don’t Know If that’s the correct pronunciation or spelling)
He used and still do? Work in the Gooders print shop this was near the police station he also lived for a time on the corner next to the Arcade I think it was above a paper shop
Street names are lost some were in the back of my memory like you I haven’t been home for a long time
Robbie
PS Ann if you’re still around say hello

The 'Old Church' is called St Illtyds its quite famous being a deconsecrated Norman church probably built before the 9th century! I cant remember the name of the pub next door but my sister, courted one of the lads who lived there. The family was called Langley. I knew the younger sister Diane for a while ;p
In the 80's my uncle Harry was the landlord there before he retired to Somerset.
When I was  a nipper I used to walk up over the mountain to see the 'walking crane' I dont know if it still exists. Then we would stop for pop at the pub and come home via the cemetary and down the hill to Browns Corner.
What year was High Chaperal on...I remember watching it in colour. Maybe we had moved into the Mill by then.

The Carpenters it is. It is now run by Jan Hucker who is from Six Bells himself.
