It must have been in the 60's unless the shop name stayed the same after they left because I was using the shop in the mid 60's.

I apologise.Old age doesnt come on its own.Mr Flook did stay over here running the shop into his later years but his son emigrated to Canada with his wife and son who i used to know in the 50`s. I left Six Bells in 1960 and have only lived there for a while in 1966. Embarassed

Phew! Thanks for the update butty....senility can play terrible tricks on the mind!!
I have memories of the shops on the main road but mostly those opposite the Doctors Steps. I lived at 16 Richmond Road so the steps was the quickest route down to Alexander Road. Do you remember when you could catch a train up to Abertillery and beyond? The platform was accessed through a gate in the railings just opposite the garage and then down lots of steps to the railway line.
Past the railings in the direction of Abertillery there were a few businesses; a grocers, which was owned by my best mates grandad, the barbers shop, then a little further up a tobacconist who would sell Woodbines or No6 fags in singles with a couple of matches! After hours there was a fag machine in the doorway.
From the railings down towards the Presbyterean chapel I remember the chemist. My mum used to send me there to collect a mysterious package. It was selotaped up in brown paper....one day the packet (accidentally) got ripped and I was never asked to collect it again, thank God!
My favourite shop was the ironmongers. The wonderful smells of putty and parafin still bring back memories of that alladins cave. Im sure my love of all things engineering comes from that shop.
I know there was a second-hand shop about the middle of the street and I played with the daughter of the owner for a couple of years but I cant remember who they were....any offers?

Laughing I can remember some of the shops in Six Bells, there was Susan's hairdressers, Adams the Ironmongers and woolshop, they used to have a big old fashion till in there.  There was the sweet shop owned by Ted and Eileen Watkins, Barrells the grocers, Ernie Wilson's that sold parafine etc, further down was the Co-op, a grocers shop and the post office with Tossles the shoe shop and a fish and chip shop on the opposite side just opposite the turning to go down to Arael street.

In the 60's there used to be a shop in almost every stree in Six Bells, Morgan's shop on the top corner of Marlborough Road and another shop at the other end.  Another shop next to the gulley in Richmond Road where I used to be sent with a plastic jug to fetch vinegar or you could buy salt cut into the size you wanted.  There was also a shop at the top of the hill going down to Alexandra Road, Hillliers, which sold groceries and then the paper shop, Cleatons and the Martins and Meek's swwt shop at the bottom of the two hills.

Memories, and what have we got there now?? Sad    I must be getting old with all these memories!!

Haydn i used to catch the train to school (Nantyglo) from Six Bells halt. I could see it coming around the bend by the arael griffin from my house and had to run like hell to catch it.
Yes there used to be lots of shops.Very rarely i come to Six Bells now but it is depressing to see all of the shops boarded up.We had nothing when i was young but everyone was in the same boat and it was a lovely place to grow up. I remember as a child princess margaret visiting the nursery school in Six Bells park and we lined the roads with our little flags.

I think we have hijacked the string with this conversation Confused Should be in the memories topic!
I have been doing my family tree for about 15 years now and, unfortunately, most of my direct family lines are now at dead ends. I have had some really strange surprises. There was a lady who lived in Richmond Road called June HARVEY. She was my mums hairdresser and I always called her 'aunty June' In my research I discovered my 2xGrandfather was from Somerset and had married a woman called Harriet HARVEY! I now wonder if the aunty tag was more than I thought.
Then there were the MORGANS who lived on Eastville Road. I found that my paternal grandmother was an Emily MORGAN, originally from the Forest of Dean area. Steven MORGAN was someone who I always referred to as cousin.
When my dad was living with his parents they lived at 68, Richmond Road which by my calculations backed onto Bryngwyn Road. I believe there were other EASONS living on the other side of Richmond Road but Im not sure who, Possibly Richard EASON, my grandfathers brother.
If anyone has memories of these families I would be grateful to hear from you.

Think you have somehow hijacked the thread  Laughing I think it is hilarious, there are some brilliant memories there.  Pity they will be missed if no one has an interest in the Flook family which is the subject heading Laughing  Laughing

The last time I saw Steven was when I was still living in Richmond Road...I was about 10 or 11. He was a couple of years younger than me and lived then in Eastville Road. I dont know why but I dont remember if he went to the Bryngwyn or Grammar after 6 Bells Jnrs. His dads name was Dennis I think. I forget which number he lived at but it was a few doors up from the Turner girls!

Haydn:  I don't know who you are but you cracked me up with your "mysterious package".  Now I have stopped laughing and wiped the tears from my eyes I can say thank you for your sense of humour.

I am writing from Canada (been here 30 years) lived in Cwmtillery / Abertillery (and the swffrydd at one time).  Went to Cwm Duffryn school though not Gelli Grug.  Worked at Dai Marks office (solicitor) for 6 -7 years with a Maureen Woodward (she married a Bryn Woodward from Gwern Berthi Road, Cwmtillery) and they moved to Rhoose - anyone know where Maureen is?
